For fans of HBO’s wildly popular Game of Thrones, the series finale left much to be desired. After eight seasons, the fictional battles between the show’s ensemble cast came to a crashing halt, despite record viewership for the cable network. Now, in the days of cable networks all having their own streaming platforms to showcase their newest hit series, HBO and HBO Max seem to be a cut above the rest. Since Game of Thrones departed the airwaves in 2019, it was long rumored that either a reboot or a sequel series could take its place in the years to follow. Now, the series has a prequel entitled House of the Dragon that has seen audiences returning to the land of the Targaryens. One of the series’ stars has gone on record to share their thoughts on the show and what it is like entering a famous franchise.

According to a report by Screen RantHouse of the Dragon actor Milly Alcock describes what it is like playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in addition to the fact that she had never seen an episode of Game of Thrones prior to being cast in the prequel. She hints that she was stunned when the actor was called to confirm her casting in the show and that she had landed such a pivotal role. When she auditioned for the part, she wasn’t sure what role it was for, and when Alcock joined the cast, she could not tell any of her friends that she was in the show. Before her appearances in House of the Dragon, the Australian Alcock was well-known in her native country for shows like Upright and the crime thriller series Reckoning.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Milly Alcock read lines for an unknown character called “YR” before learning later that the 22-year-old had landed the hefty role of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. In an interview with the outlet, Alcock confirms that went she got the call that she had been cast in House of the Dragon, her friend thought someone may have died because she was very secretive about the phone call while they were in the room. She explained that I couldn’t tell anyone for so long,” and how that affected her friendships because everything was shrouded in mystery for quite some time before the series wrapped.

House of the Dragon is one of the bright spots for the streamer thus far this year, with just a few episodes premiering already on HBO Max. Costarring with Milly Alcock on the series is an ensemble cast that includes British actor Paddy Considine, The Crown alum Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Notting Hill fan favorite Rhys Ifans, and Ready Player One actor Olivia Cooke. Critics and audiences have been kind to the series so far since it premiered last month. Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks the show with an impressive 85% on its Tomatometer, as well as the same rating for its Audience Score, making it one of the only shows under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella to receive such high marks. Since its debut, House of the Dragon has already been renewed for season two before the first season finishes airing.
