In 2019, Harrison Ford famously said that when he was done playing Indiana Jones, the character would be done as well. Either Ford had a change of heart and is now willing to let another actor take a swing at playing the iconic archaeologist, or that demand doesn’t apply to video games.

In any case, Troy Baker is about to take a crack at the character in the new video game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Troy Baker The New Indiana Jones

Troy Baker, widely known for originating Joel in The Last of Us video game, is stepping into the boots of Indiana Jones in Bethesda’s upcoming game based on Ford’s most famous role.

The game, set to take place between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, promises an immersive experience that captures the essence of the beloved adventurer while introducing new characters and mysteries.

Charm And Humor

MachinesGames’ co-founder and lead game designer, Jerk Gustafsson, discussed Baker’s involvement in the project, highlighting his ability to bring charm and humor to the character.

Gustafsson revealed that Baker is not only a talented actor but also a devoted Indiana Jones fan, which is the exact combination you look for when adapting such a beloved character.

After Raiders of the Lost Ark

The game starts about a year after the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with Indiana Jones finding himself adrift after separating from Marion.

The story kicks off when Indy discovers a man named Locus stealing what seems to be an item of no significance from the college where Indy works. In search of answers, Indy ends up heading to Rome to see if the Vatican can help him unravel a mystery that turns out to be much larger.

Global Adventure

Indiana Jones

The Indiana Jones game’s trailer and presentation hint at the significance of the titular Great Circle, which is a visual representation of all the sites of great spiritual significance across the globe.

The trailer hints that the game will take players on a global adventure stopping at locations such as the Forgotten Temples of the Sukhothai, the pyramids of Egypt, and the Himalayas.

The main antagonist, Emmerich Voss, voiced by Marios Gavrilis, shares Indiana Jones’ obsession with major mysteries and the unknown, making him a compelling adversary. Italian actress Alessandra Mastronardi also lends her voice to Gina Lombardi, an investigative journalist with a personal stake in the story.

Indiana Jones Just Like Harrison Ford

The gameplay, put together by the development team, including senior lighting artist Juli Haraldsdottir, audio director Pete Ward, and others, offers a mix of story, puzzle-solving, open-world exploration, and stealth. It’s reminiscent of the adventurous spirit of the Indiana Jones films.

To fully capture the Indiana Jones vibe, the game developers took special care to animate Indy to look exactly as Harrison Ford did in the 80s when the first films were released.

The animation was created using motion-capture performances by stuntmen and the graphics of the game were developed using classic Indy world maps, similar to the original films.

A Worthy Heir

Indiana Jones

Even if Ford wasn’t a fan of giving up the Indiana Jones character to another actor, Troy Baker has proven to be more than a worthy heir. He actively contributed to enhancing the game during the development process.

Flying out to MachineGames’ home base in Sweden, he collaborated on blocking sessions and influenced adjustments to the script, scene setups, and camera angles to make sure Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a game deserving of the iconic franchise.
