Polling Proves The Most Anticipated Movie Of 2023 Doesn’t Star Harrison Ford Or Tom Cruise

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes out on top of Fandango's poll of the most anticipated movies of 2023.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

We may all miss Harrison Ford as the treasure-hunting Indiana Jones and Tom Cruise as the death-defying Ethan Hunt, but according to a new poll, they’re falling a bit behind Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. Fandango polled fans about the most anticipated movies of 2023, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came out on top. The return of Indy came in at #5, while the anticipation for the next Mission: Impossible flick was in the bottom half at #7.

Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise shouldn’t feel too bad about being edged out by the Guardians. It’s been six years since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which, unlike 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was generally well received. While holiday specials and Avengers movies have given us a chance to see the heroes regardless, it hasn’t been since Vol. 2 that we got to see them both in the lead roles and in a genuine action adventure.

Not to mention that just like fans were left to wonder what would happen to Harrison Ford’s frozen Han Solo at the end of 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame has left us all to wonder whether or not Peter Quill would be reunited with Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Then there’s the question of — assuming they are reunited — whether this Gamora could ever feel the love for Quill that the other one did.

Marvel makes an impressive showing on Fandango’s list; owning the top three spots with Guardians 3, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. If Marvel’s popularity keeps on its upswing, Harrison Ford should find himself on the list for next year, considering he’ll be starring in two Marvel movies (Thunderbolts and Captain America: New World Order) in 2024. The Marvels is conspicuously absent from the list, though it seems likely that’s at least in part due to it being the only 2023 Marvel film that has yet to release a trailer.

In between the Marvel top three and Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones return is John Wick: Chapter 4 at #4. Sandwiched between Indiana Jones and Mission: Impossible is the sole DC Studios movie on the list at #6: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The list ends — in descending order — with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Creed III, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Both Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise get a lot more attractive when you divorce superhero movies from the list. Fandango shared top-five lists in other categories, including “2023’s Most Anticipated Action/Adventure Movies (non-superhero).” Without competition from the Avengers or the Justice League, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One take the top 2 spots followed by The Hunger Games, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Fast X.
