Exclusive: Christopher Nolan Eyeing Will Smith For Next Movie
Giant Freakin Robot has the scoop that Christopher Nolan is keying in on Will Smith to star in his next big budget movie project.
Christopher Nolan has a movie in the works right now that sure appears like it has the entire Hollywood universe in the cast. It’s shaping up to be a massive production with a story about one of the most consequential men maybe in the history of humankind. But it looks like he is already starting to think ahead about his next film and who that could include. We might have an idea on that front. The latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive from our trusted and proven source has it that Nolan is eyeing Will Smith for a lead role, uniting one of Hollywood’s best directors and one of its brightest stars for a movie.
According to our source, Christopher Nolan is planning another movie already and has an idea of what he wants in a lead, adding diversity to the cast with a big name having a star’s cache. Originally, Giant Freakin Robot had the exclusive that Ray Fisher was being considered for that part, but that appears to be shifting now. With Will Smith under major consideration, we could be looking at an all-time blockbuster seeing as how these are a couple of the premier talents out there. And these two have come close to working together in the past as well, so we might be looking at the inevitable when it comes to this pairing.
That’s because more than a decade ago (feel old?), Will Smith had been one of the main actors considered to play the lead role in Inception. Christopher Nolan’s classic heist movie in the heart of someone’s dreams was a mind (and reality) bending flick of epic proportions. But according to the LA Times (via Playlist) at the time, they decided to go ahead with Leonardo DiCaprio in the role due to financial, and studio considerations. Because the film was so high-concept, there might have been a feeling that “too big” a star could have compromised some aspects of that. But now, more than ten years later, it looks like Nolan and Will Smith could be dovetailing into a major film.
Before we get this possible Christopher Nolan and Will Smith team-up, the director has to get his current movie to the finish line. That is Oppenheimer which will tell the story of the titular character J. Robert Oppenheimer who was the lead scientist on the Manhattan Project, the initiative that ultimately led to the creation of the atom bomb. The movie is currently filming and we’ve already seen a few shots from the set. Cillian Murphy is in the lead as Oppenheimer and this cast is a veritable who’s who of Hollywood.
In addition to Murphy, Christopher Nolan has Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Kenneth Branagh, and many, many others on board in various roles. It’s actually kind of crazy just how stacked this cast is with Nolan seemingly able to wrangle just about anybody from the town into the production. That movie isn’t due out for another year though, set to hit theaters in July of 2023.
We will have to see how this all plays out with Will Smith and Christopher Nolan. One would think that considering each’s immense talent they would land on a project together before it was all said and done. That could be closer to happening now than ever.
