The 2010s Cyberpunk Sci-Fi Thriller With A-List Actors That Needs To Become A Cult Classic

Repo Men focuses on a team that repossesses artificial organs bought on credit. With several A-list actors such as Jude Law and Forest Whitaker and hilariously over-the-top acting, it’s on its way to becoming a cult classic.

Repo Men Is Set In A Dystopian 2025

Repo Men is a movie that’s based on The Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia. It’s an American-Canadian production directed by Miguel Sapochnik with screenwriting by Eric Garcia and Garrett Lerner.

The movie tells a story about a dystopian future that’s actually not so far away from today. The story is set in the year 2025, only a year or so from now.

In this future, it’s possible to buy artificial organs on credit. However, when people don’t pay on time, a group of people, known as repo men, come to take back the organ.

The Movie Stars Jude Law And Forest Whitaker

The story follows a man, Remy, who was originally a repo man. However, when he loses his own heart, he quickly joins the other side, having to fight with old friends.

The cast is full of A-list actors. Jude Law plays the main character, Remy, while Forest Whitaker plays his old friend and fellow repo man.

In addition to these two, actors such as Alice Braga, Liev Schreiber, Carice van Houten, Liza Lapira, and Yvette Nicole Brown play various characters throughout the movie.

The Real Reason Repo Men Flopped

Critics weren’t happy with Repo Men. The movie received an average score of 21 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. According to the average audience score of 41 percent on the same site, audience members didn’t enjoy it much either.

Part of the reason for the bad reviews was because of a similar movie released two years before, Repo! The Genetic Opera.

The stories aren’t actually all that similar, besides the fact that people can get organs on credit, and those that don’t pay to have their organs repossessed. However, it sounds similar enough that people couldn’t help but compare even before Repo Men came out.

This meant that a lot of people were bombing the movie without ever really giving it a chance, or even watching it, leading to a box office flop, and poor reviews online.

The Potential To Become A Cult Classic

That doesn’t mean it would have been a good movie otherwise. It had a lot of issues, including an excess of gore, and the twist ending wasn’t a favorite amongst all viewers.

While Repo Men isn’t great, it does have the potential to be a cult classic. For one, though it’s a 2010 movie, it has a lot of the characteristics of 80s movies that became cult classics. The acting is excessive but fun, there is humor and satire hidden in the plot, and there is a lot of depth in the movie once you go back and watch it a second time.

The fans of the movie are rather dedicated and passionate about the movie. However, it doesn’t quite have the large fanbase it needs just yet. If more people learn about the movie and fall in love with the exaggerated acting, it will likely become a cult classic soon enough.

Where To Stream Repo Men

If you want to be a part of turning this movie into a cult classic, Repo Men is available to stream on Starz as part of a membership, or you can buy or rent it on multiple platforms, such as AppleTV.
