Independence Day 2 Is Officially A Go, Get The Details Here

fb share tweet share

independence dayThere’s been so much talk of Independence Day 2 that who the hell knows what’s going on. It’s going to be one movie, it’s going to be two movies, Will Smith is back, Will Smith isn’t back, there’s a script for if Will Smith is back and one for if he isn’t. One thing is certain, however, this is in fact now officially happening.

Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has given a green light to the long gestating sequel, there’s even a start and a tentative release date scheduled. Filming is now slated to kick off in May of 2015, with a public unveiling on the books for June 26, 2016. At least you’ll be able to go to a theater and see Independence Day 2 on Independence Day if you’re so inclined, and this will mark the 20th anniversary of the first film. That is, unless the schedule gets bumped around, which often happens with these things, especially this far out. We’ll have to wait and see, but odds are they’ll try to keep it as close to the 4th of July as they can.

Jared Leto May Replace Will Smith In Superpowered Adventure Brilliance

jared letoLet’s all go back in time to the year 1995, when pre-production began on Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day, the film that would turn popular rapper Will Smith into an international superstar. Can you possibly imagine what kind of madness would have occurred if he had dropped out of that film, only to be replaced by Jared Leto, who had just wrapped his run as heartthrob Jared Catalano on the short-lived MTV drama My So-Called Life? (Alternately, what if Will Smith was in Requiem for a Dream?) In any case, that particular actor substitution is currently in the works for Legendary Pictures’ big-budget thriller Brilliance, as Leto is currently in talks to take over the role vacated by Smith at the end of last month.

Leto is not the go-to name when it comes to genre flicks, especially after the massive success he has enjoyed following his superb return to acting in Jean-Marc Vallée’s AIDS drama Dallas Buyers Club. Considering he took home the Best Supporting Actor award at the Academy Awards earlier this year for his role as the transgendered Rayon, one would normally assume that his next project would be soaked in prestige and awards buzz. Now, I’m not saying there’s a complete lack of critical depth for a Heroes-ish novel adaptation about superpowers gone wrong, but I’m thinking it loudly.

Will Smith Drops Out Of Super-Powers Flick Brilliance

will smith men in black 3After watching After Earth and Winter’s Tale, one would be perfectly sane in thinking that Will Smith was comfortable joining any film that came his way. And yet, he’s recently turned down as many movies as he’s been attached to, and he just dropped out of Legendary’s promising thriller Brilliance, which he’d only officially gotten jiggy with fairly recently.

Both parties separated amicably, and the decision came down to timing. Smith’s upcoming schedule conflicted with Brilliance‘s production start, which had been moved around a few times since the studio acquired the material last year. You’d have thought someone would have had the foresight to realize this when Smith joined Prometheus actress Noomi Rapace in signing on to the superpowered tale a few weeks ago. A nice “Hey, I’ll be busy in a few months,” would have been fine.

Will Smith Looking To Shine In New Sci-Fi Thriller Brilliance

SmithIt has to be said, Will Smith is the new Tom Cruise. Here’s an example of an actor who was once a mighty box-office draw, but now his star has begun to dwindle. It seems that Tom Cruise is starring in almost every sci-fi action film these days, and now Will Smith is following suit. We saw it with Tom Cruise in Oblivion last year and Edge of Tomorrow this year, and now we’re seeing it with Will Smith, first with After Earth, and now with the sci-fi thriller Selling Time and possibly the new sci-fi film Brilliance.

According to The Wrap, Will Smith is in talks to star in a would-be franchise starter called Brilliance for Legendary Pictures and Universal. The science fiction film is set in a world where some people are born with heightened cognitive abilities. These people are called “brilliants,” and the story follows Nick Cooper, a federal agent with these extraordinary gifts, which makes him the very best at hunting terrorists around the world. It’s believed that Smith would play Cooper.

Will Smith Confirms He’s Not Coming Back For Independence Day Sequels

will smith independence dayWelcome to Earth, everyone, where news of whether Will Smith is in a movie or not can remain a hot ticket item for eight months even though nothing has changed. Last June, we reported that director Roland Emmerich claimed Smith was too expensive to bring back for his upcoming Independence Day sequels. Well now Will Smith himself is saying Will Smith won’t reprise Will Smith’s role of fighter pilot Stephen Hiller for ID Forever Part 1. I guess we’ll all have to return to burning mass piles of After Earth DVDs and Big Willie Style CDs for Smith-centered entertainment.

As you can imagine, this still isn’t the final nail in the coffin, as Smith has jumped back and forth between returning and staying away. As Deadline states, the Oscar-nominated actor reportedly told Fox that he is no longer interested in coming back, and that he will probably soon have a similar conversation with Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin.

Will Smith Attached To New Sci-Fi Project Selling Time

SmithAs director Roland Emmerich courts Will Smith to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller in the Independence Day sequel, the 45-year-old actor is looking around at other science fiction/action films to star in as a way to get back on top of the box office. Smith’s After Earth was a box office and critical disappointment earlier this year, so whatever he chooses to appear in next needs to be a hit.

According to The Wrap, Will Smith is attached to a new sci-fi film called Selling Time. Written by Dan McDermott, Selling Time follows a man who is offered the opportunity to re-live the worse day of his life. In exchange, the man will receive seven more years to his existing life. There is no director attached at the moment, but a few top-tier screenwriters tried to tackle the script in the past, such as Spike Lee.

Apparently, Smith “does not have an official deal in place but he is in the process of coming aboard.” It also appears that Smith had the opportunity to star in the film, but due to scheduling problems he was unable to commit. John Davis (Predators, I, Robot) is attached to produce the film with Jennifer Klein (Pearl Harbor, Armageddon) for Davis Entertainment. Selling Time will find a home with the movie studio Twentieth Century Fox.
