In 2007, Will Smith paired with director Francis Lawrence to bring audiences what would become a classic piece of sci-fi cinema with I Am Legend. While Smith’s character died in the theatrical release, an alternate ending that landed on the DVD opened up the possibility for the story to continue. I Am Legend 2 is well on the way with Will Smith returning to the project alongside Michael B. Jordan and recently, at the Red Sea International Film Festival (as per Variety), Smith gave some updates on the highly-anticipated film.
Filming Starts Soon
Of course, the sequel will completely ignore the theatrical ending that I Am Legend received, giving Will Smith’s character another chance at life. While giving comments about I Am Legend 2, Smith revealed that he would be speaking with his co-star, Michael B. Jordan, the following day to solidify some more storylines. Smith also revealed that the writing team was “really close” to filming as the script was completed.
Michael B. Jordan Co-starring
Even though the script may be finished, Will Smith wasn’t forthcoming with more information about I Am Legend 2. The actor reiterated that Michael B. Jordan would be starring alongside him but didn’t give more information as to who his character will be or how he’ll fit in with the story. Likewise, Smith didn’t open up about his character or what audiences can expect from his next chapter as he’ll essentially be back from the dead.
The Post-Apocalyptic World Of I Am Legend
For those who may need a refresher, Will Smith starred in I Am Legend as a scientist and survivor of an apocalypse-causing virus that wipes out a large number of the population, turning those who are infected into zombie-like creatures. Wandering the streets of New York City with his trusty dog by his side, Robert is both searching for survivors and hoping to discover a cure. The end of the film saw Robert meet a gruesome end, so it will be exciting for the project to reimagine Robert’s survival in I Am Legend 2.
Will Smith Making Bad Boys 4
Aside from Will Smith’s upcoming work on I Am Legend 2, the actor has another installment in the Bad Boys franchise on the way, which he also spoke about at the Red Sea International Film Festival. Yet to be given an official title, the fourth film in the buddy cop series will again feature Will Smith alongside Martin Lawrence. Filmmaking duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will return to their posts as directors for the feature after helming the third movie which came out in 2020.Along with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the upcoming feature will also star Vanessa Hudgens, Paola Núñez, Alexander Ludwig, Tasha Smith, Eric Dane, Rhea Seehorn, and Ioan Gruffudd. Like I Am Legend 2, no plot details surrounding Bad Boys 4 have been revealed but it’s currently set for a release date on June 14, 2024, setting it up for summer blockbuster season.
