The Star Wars Celebration came and went, and there were a ton of huge announcements for the franchise. Notably absent were any announcements about forward momentum for the Donald Glover series where he reprises the role of Lando Calrissian. Fortunately, Glover himself has given some reassurance on that front as he told GQ, “I mean we’re talking about it,” adding, “That’s as much as I can say, you know, without [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down.” (via IGN)

This is definitely great news because Donald Glover replacing Billy Dee Williams as a young Lando Calrissian was one of the most inspired choices the Star Wars franchise has made since the Disney acquisition. However, we haven’t seen the multihyphenate actor return to the role since his first appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Although reviews for that movie were relatively mixed, it was universally agreed that Glover as Lando was a thing that needed to continue to happen.

Disney and Lucasfilm agreed with fans too, as they announced a Disney+ series that would bring Donald Glover back as Lando in 2020 with Justin Simien developing the project. After that, the House of Mouse stayed mum about the show until Disney recently scrapped some projects from its schedule. Although some previously announced projects were cleared out, the Lando project was left on the slate.

Clearly, fans and Disney aren’t letting go of Donald Glover as Lando just yet, but it’s totally unclear when we could finally see this project come to fruition. Bets would be on the Star Wars Celebration being the best place to tease further development, but the series was a no-show despite a bunch of other massive announcements. You would think that Disney would drop a vague release date if the project were even close to starting filming.

Still, Disney knows how to keep Star Wars fans distracted, as they released a whole flood of hype-worthy announcements to make up for the lack of Donald Glover as Lando progress. For one, fans got confirmation that Ahsoka would be coming out in August 2023 and that The Acolyte and Andor Season 2 would be dropping in 2024. The biggest headline was that there are three new live-action Star Wars movies in development.

The three films will be directed by James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Mangold is making a film that depicts the dawn of the Force and the Jedi, Filoni’s film will focus on the New Republic, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker and bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey. With all of these shows and movies in the chamber, perhaps one of them can find a way to bring back Donald Glover as Lando before he gets his own sh

Until Disney outright says that there won’t be a Donald Glover-starring Lando show anymore, fans are going to continue to wait and hold out hope. You have to imagine that Disney’s willingness to play into fan service with the franchise would lead them to make those fan wishes come through. Until then, we’ll keep you updated on all upcoming Star Wars shows and movies.
