It would seem that Disney is hellbent on making live-action remakes of its animated hits we all enjoyed as kids, including 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, 2019’s Lady and the Tramp, and several other releases leading up to 2023’s Little Mermaid. Well, a new piece of news suggests that Disney might be planning for a live-action remake of 2010’s Tangled animated movie, with Florence Pugh as Rapunzel.

An unconfirmed report claims Disney wants Baz Luhrmann to direct a live-action Tangled and that the studio wants Florence Pugh to play the lead.

The report comes via One Take News, stating that Baz Luhrmann is Disney’s top choice as the director of live-action Tangled. The same Twitter post states that Florence Pugh, who starred in Marvel’s Black Widow, is the top choice for Rapunzel.

With this said, it’s important to note that none of this was officially confirmed nor denied by either Disney, Luhrmann, Pugh, or just about anyone who could potentially be involved with the alleged project. However, that didn’t stop the rumors from spreading via the web, with fans discussing the possible live-action adaptation.

Florence Pugh is apparently among the top contenders for the role of Tangled’s protagonists, with fans petitioning Disney to choose Pugh for the role of Rapunzel since 2020.

Though the news of a potential live-action Tangled is currently spreading like wildfire, the idea of Florence Pugh portraying Rapunzel isn’t that fresh. In fact, the live-action adaptation has been highly anticipated among the fans, with the fandom picking their favorite actors for the film.

Actor Zachary Levi, who voiced Eugene Fitzerbert, aka Flynn Rider, in the original Tangled, recently addressed the rumors, stating that he isn’t privy to what the actual status of the movie is or whether Florence Pugh was cast as Rapunzel. However, he did suggest that he’d be open to playing a live-action version of his Disney character, especially if Pugh’s involved.

Baz Luhrmann is still enjoying the massive success of his Oscar-nominated Elvis Presley biopic, which was a huge commercial and critical success. Luhrmann is also known for producing the Red Curtain Trilogy of romance films, and many are now wondering how the director of 2013’s Great Gatsby remake would apply his unique style to the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Tangled.

The Origins Of Tangled

In 2010, Disney put its own spin on the classic tale of Rapunzel with Tangled. The movie follows the hero as she attempts to escape the clutches of an evil witch who values her magical hair enough to keep her under lock and key. The animated film was a massive hit, and it marked Disney’s return to form after a decade of hit-and-miss releases throughout the 2000s, such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Meet the Robinsons, Treasure Planet, Mars Needs Moms, etc.

As for if/when we’ll get either a confirmation or denial from Disney about the live-action Tangled, we’ll probably have to wait until after the ongoing Actors’ and Writers’ strikes.
