Avatar (2009)

James Cameron’s blockbuster film, Avatar, will soon be available for streaming on Disney+ and Max, joining its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. According to the announcement shared via X (formerly known as Twitter), other films joining the Max streaming library include The Age of Adaline, Agent Cody Banks, American Gangster, and many more.

Avatar, and other Disney films, will soon be available to stream on both Disney+ and Max.

The idea of having Disney+ and Max offering a movie as significant as Avatar might seem absurd. However, the practice has actually become quite common over the last 18 months, especially with 20th Century Studios’ films. The reason why both movies in the popular sci-fi franchise are available on two streaming platforms is due to a licensing agreement.

Disney+ and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max previously struck a unique deal that allows them to share streaming rights for 50 percent of the studio’s titles until the end of 2022. This joint streaming arrangement was established in 2021 and enabled Max to share streaming windows with Disney+ and Hulu for half of the studio’s titles through 2022.

The last film covered by this contract is Avatar: The Way of Water, which will serve as an impressive finale to Max’s more than 40-year association with 20th Century Studios. Following this blockbuster release, all forthcoming titles from 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures, to the best of current knowledge, will be available either on Hulu or Disney+, depending on their target audience.

It is likely that darker films, like The Boogeyman, will be featured on Hulu, while family-friendly projects like future Avatar or Planet of the Apes will find their place on Disney+. The division of Avatar: The Way of Water between Disney+ and Max not only signifies the addition of a significant new title to the Disney+ platform but also marks the end of an era for 20th Century Studios movies.

The Story of Avatar

Avatar was released in 2009 and quickly became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. The film, now available to stream on Disney+ and Max, is known for its groundbreaking use of 3D technology and visual effects, setting new standards for cinematic immersion. The story is set in the mid-22nd century on a moon called Pandora, which is rich in a valuable mineral called “unobtainium.”

Earth’s Resources Development Administration (RDA) is a powerful corporation that seeks to mine unobtainium from Pandora. To do this, they interact with the indigenous humanoid species known as the Na’vi, who live in harmony with nature and their environment. Former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is recruited to control a genetically engineered Na’vi-human body called an “avatar.”

Disney+ and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max previously struck a unique deal that allows them to share streaming rights for 50 percent of the studio’s titles until the end of 2022.

Through this avatar, Jake can interact with the Na’vi and learn about their ways to gain their trust and support the RDA’s mining efforts. As Jake spends more time with the Na’vi, especially Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), he begins to question the morality of the RDA’s actions. He also starts to sympathize with the Na’vi and their spiritual connection to Pandora.

Fans can catch up on the sci-fi adventures of Avatar and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, on Disney+ and Max.
