Disney has been steadily ramping up the production of their live-action remakes since the massive success of films like The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Jungle Book were made. Most of the films that are remade in the new CGI-heavy style have all been older classics that were made in the 1950s. Granted, some were 90s animations like Aladdin and The Lion King. Now, it has been announced that a more contemporary Disney animation is going to be remade, and that movie is Lilo & Stitch.

Lilo & Stitch was initially released back in 2002, and became an instant classic, despite it not being more than 20 years old. Tasked with taking this Hawaiian adventure into a whole new live-action world is Daniel Fleischer-Camp. The man has gained massive notoriety after the indie film, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, became a massive success. Now, he is going to be responsible for bringing to life one of the best contemporary Disney stories ever made. Chris Kekaniokalani Bright is currently in negotiations to write the script, and he previously worked on Moana.

There has been no mention if the film is going to be made strictly for a release on Disney+, or if it the studio will aim for a theatrical release. It is a bit hard to determine that as Disney has been altering between the two mediums. The upcoming live-action version of Pinocchio is going to be a Disney+ release, and the film boasts a big enough cast to warrant a theatrical release. Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Luke Evans, and Lorraine Bracco are part of the cast for that film. Lilo & Stitch is going to be a huge release that is likely to garner an impressive cast as well.

Lilo & Stitch follows the life of Lilo, who is an outcast that is living with her older sister Nani. Nani is trying to keep things together, so social workers do not take Lilo away. She prays one night for a friend, and what arrives is an alien named Stitch. Stitch is a creature that was created to do nothing but destroy. Slowly, Lilo and Stich form a bond that no one can break. The film contains heavy messages of togetherness and family, especially when it comes to those who randomly show up and become our family. It is truly one of the best and heartwarming stories that Disney has ever told, spawning a massive following and plenty of franchise capabilities.

With Lilo & Stitch joining the expansive list of live-action adaptations for Disney, it is a wonder if the media giant is going to be aiming to adapt further contemporary films into the lineup. So far, Lilo & Stich is the newest film in terms of release year that is being rebooted in the live-action format. Mulan had also been adapted, but the original was released in 1998. L&S is now the newest Disney release to be adapted. Also, we wonder if Disney is ever going to attempt to tackle some of their Pixar releases in this same format.
