The highly anticipated world premiere of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, featuring the talented Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, took place in Los Angeles on July 9. The movie’s debut sparked an outpouring of reactions on social media, with those in attendance describing it as hilarious, brilliant extravagant, and exceptionally intelligent.

Barbie is receiving universal critical praise after its world premiere.

Plot details for Barbie have been kept under wraps, with a premise that doesn’t reveal too much. The story begins when Barbie is expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect doll.

Robbie was happy to follow any creative vision as long as the Barbie Dreamhouse, with a slide that leads from her bedroom down to her pool, was incorporated into the story.

So she and Ken venture off into the real world to find true happiness. Greta Gerwig directs the much-talked-about movie from a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach.

The Cast Of Barbie

Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel doll, with Ryan Gosling as Ken. The ensemble cast features several high-profile stars as various versions of the dolls. The lineup includes Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa, and John Cena.

America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, Jamie Demetriou, and Emerald Fennell also make notable appearances in Barbie. Official reviews from critics will be available closer to the film’s release on July 21. Nonetheless, the movie has already sparked excitement due to its meme-worthy clips and smart advertising.

Interestingly, Gerwig drew inspiration for Barbie from her real-life experiences. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she likened the story to her career move from acting to directing. “When you’re directing something, you have to be a bit stupid about yourself or a little bit unconscious… I had no idea [about the coincidence],” she told the publication.

“But that’s true. It’s completely true. The things where you really feel unconsciously seen are things like that, where you realize, ‘Oh, man, I didn’t hide anywhere.’ And that’s always part of the joy of making art for people, is sometimes they understand it more than you do, which is unsettling,” Gerwig added about the Barbie movie.

Gerwig’s personal connection to Barbie is evident in her distinct artistic vision for the film. This vision apparently led to the departure of original star Amy Schumer.

The actress debunked the previously cited scheduling conflicts as the reason for her exit. Instead, Schumer revealed that she left due to “creative differences” with Gerwig but expressed no animosity towards the director.

Gerwig later hired Margot Robbie, who only had one condition for the film. Robbie was happy to follow any creative vision as long as the Barbie Dreamhouse, with a slide that leads from her bedroom down to her pool, was incorporated into the story. Gerwig agreed, with the Dreamhouse prominently featured in all the promotional material for the movie.

Another noteworthy aspect of Barbie’s pre-release marketing campaign is a scene featuring Robbie replicating Barbie’s distinctive arched feet. Gerwig recently provided insight into filming the scene, emphasizing that CGI was not used to bring the visual to life. The director famously refused to consider CGI because everyone would know it was fake.

Additionally, she praised Robbie for her elegant feet, describing them as those of a dancer. Gerwig suggested that the Barbie actress simply hold onto a bar positioned off-camera and perform the scene in a natural manner.

With so much thought and effort put into every sequence, it will be interesting to see the fan reactions with the movie hits theaters in the coming weeks.
