Avatar 2 Is Bringing Back The Franchise’s Best Character
In a strange turn of events, it has been announced that Avatar 2 is going to be bringing back the best character from the first movie, which might have seemed impossible.
Following the death of Colonel Miles Quaritch in 2009’s Avatar, fans were surprised to learn that Stephen Lang would be reprising the role in the upcoming sequel. The villain, who was killed by two arrows to the chest during the attack on the Tree of Souls, will be returning as a Recombinant – a Na’vi Avatar embedded with the memories of human soldiers. And according to the actor, the character won’t be returning alone as Avatar 2 will feature an army of avatar soldiers ready for battle.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Stephen Lang discussed Quaritch’s epic return and how he will slowly become more menacing in Avatar: The Way of Water and its subsequent sequels. “He’s bigger, he’s bluer, and he’s pissed off. But there may be an aspect of humility,” the 69-year-old told the publication. “When you take two Na’vi arrows in the chest, that’s gonna have some kind of effect on you,” Lang added that the character always moved in straight lines and right angles. But now he’s as lithe as they come. In Avatar 2 he has also the cunning and feral quality of the Na’vi.
With the memories of his demise, the newer version of Quaritch will be on a quest for revenge in Avatar 2. But he’s not the only one. The Resources Development Administration (RDA), the same company from the first film, is also set to return with improved technology to combat the Na’vi. This includes 3D-printing weapons factories and a larger city called Bridgehead that’s using up resources from Pandora’s oceans. But it’s hard to imagine Eywa, the guiding force of life and deity of the magical realm, will them get away with any of that.
Stephen Lang’s return as a Na’vi version of Quaritch comes shortly after the revelation of Sigourney Weaver’s appearance in Avatar 2. Like her co-star’s character, Dr. Grace Augustine died in Avatar. But instead of reprising her role, Weaver will play a young Na’vi girl named Kiri, who is the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri, Variety reports. “As an acting challenge, it’s big,” director James Cameron told the publication. “We’re gonna have a 60-something actor playing a character decades younger than her actual biological age.” He added that the Alien star thought it was all kinds of fun.
With the return of familiar villains alongside a set of avatar soldiers ready for battle, Avatar 2 promises to be an action-packed spectacle that audiences have come to expect from a James Cameron movie. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, and the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they are forced to endure.
Directed by James Cameron, from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno, it is the second film in the epic sci-fi franchise. The film also features a stellar cast. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Matt Gerald reprise their roles from the original movie – with Sigourney Weaver returning as a teenager. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, and Vin Diesel. Avatar 2 is set for release on December 16th.
