Although Zendaya wasn’t able to accept her first-ever Golden Globe Award in person, the actress shared her excitement about winning the Best Actress in a Drama Series accolade in a post on social media. Alongside a whimsical photo of her dancing in a crop top and sweatpants, the 26-year-old expressed her disappointment at not being able to attend the glamorous ceremony due to work commitments.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to be there tonight,” Zendaya wrote. “But I just wanted to say thank you for this incredible honor.” The Marvel alum also expressed her admiration for the other nominees and gratitude for her cast mates.

“To my fellow nominees, it is a privilege to be named beside you, I admire you all deeply. And thank you to my Euphoria family, without you, none of this is possible.”

Zendaya also thanked viewers for allowing Rue into their hearts. “I think everyone knows how much she means to me. But the fact that she can mean something to someone else is a gift,” she continued. “I’m honestly at a loss for words as I type this. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.”

After sharing the heartfelt message, the Spider-Man star received thousands of congratulatory notes from friends and fans.

Created by Sam Levinson for HBO, Euphoria tells the story of a recovering teenage drug addict named Rue Bennett, struggling to find her place in the world. Zendaya’s portrayal of the character is mostly why the series has resonated with viewers. Although it tackles some difficult topics, at its core, the series is a coming-of-age story about healing from the things that plague us.

Starring alongside Zendaya as Rue Bennett, are Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard, and Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn. Euphoria premiered in 2019 and is based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name. Although the series received positive reviews for its cinematography and performances, it’s been deemed controversial for its subject matter, nudity, and sexual content.

Still, the series was renewed for a second season, with two one-hour specials airing in December 2020 and January 2021. Season two premiered in 2022, which led to Euphoria being picked up for a third outing. Speaking about her hopes for Rue in Season 3, Zendaya told fans at an awards season event that she would like her character to enjoy life.

“My one wish [for Rue] is literally just to be able to be alive and maybe enjoy it,” Zendaya said via The Hollywood Reporter. The Dune actress added that Rue feels like she’s always drowning and hopes that, even for a moment, she can breathe and keep her head above water with a little bit of happiness and a little bit of joy. Interestingly, the actress was snubbed by the Golden Globes for her work in the first season of Euphoria.

But Zendaya has won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Rue. In her 2022 Emmy speech, the actress also touched on how much the character means to her. Away from awards shows, the Euphoria star’s upcoming projects include the second installment of Dune and the romantic sports comedy, Challengers.
