Tobey Maguire may be known now as the original big-screen Peter Parker, bringing the Marvel superhero to life in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, but the actor was already famous before putting on the tights. In an interview on Howard Stern’s podcast, the award-winning actor lays to rest the rumor that he signed up for acting classes after Spider-Man in order to pick up women. For years, that was the rumor regarding his return to classes, but Maguire laid it to rest, explaining that his intention was just to further learn the craft and acquire more experience before his second outing as the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Howard Stern, demonstrating the tact and class that made him the biggest name on radio in the 90’s, followed up by asking “How old are the chicks when you go there basically are they teenagers, or how many models were in those class,” prompting Tobey Maguire to attempt a classy deflect with “there’s you know a real big age range and yeah there’s some beautiful women in there for sure.” For anyone unaware of Maguire’s Hollywood antics before becoming a superhero, the star was one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s best friends, with the two part an infamous group of young male stars that would frequently hook up with starlets and models.

Tobey Maguire had no need to take acting classes to meet women, as during the filming of Spider-Man, a tradition started when he and Kirsten Dunst, playing Mary-Jane Watson in the film, started a real relationship. The pairing of Peter Parker actors with their love interest held for the next two pairings as well, with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone dating on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man while Tom Holland and Zendaya did the same for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Today, only Holland and Zendaya are still together, while Maguire would meet his future wife a year after Spider-Man’s release.

The couple married in 2009, had two children, a son and a daughter, before separating in 2016 and finally divorcing in 2020. The sober star has been with models, famous actresses, and the daughter of one of Hollywood’s most powerful men, he doesn’t need acting classes to pick up women, but he also has had his share of controversary.

Remember hearing about the famous backroom poker game frequented by stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck? The woman behind it eventually wrote a book, which became a movie, Molly’s Game, featuring Michael Cera acting against type as a Hollywood actor with a short fuse referred to as “Player X.” Yes, Tobey Maguire was the real-life “Player X,” backed up by his showing up at the 2005-2007 ESPN World Series of Poker Main Event Championship.

So no, Tobey Maguire did not go back to acting classes to pick up women. The star’s latest project was as an executive producer for Babylon, the recent Golden Age of Hollywood flop starring Margot Robbie. Upcoming projects for Maguire are heavily rumored to include Secret Wars, coming back again as Peter Parker, and maybe, just maybe, getting to star in Spider-Man 4, a continuation of the first trilogy.
