January Jones is looking cute in a black crop top under a red race car driver jacket that shows off her toned stomach. The Mad Men star’s caption on the Instagram post says simply: “It’s a long story..” with a race car emoji, intriguing viewers in more ways than one. She doesn’t elaborate in the post about just what that story is, however.

As we ponder that mystery, we can tell you that, according to her biography on IMDb, January Jones was born on January 5, 1978. She was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Marvin Roger Jones, a gym teacher/fitness director, and Karen Sue Jones, who manages a sporting goods store.

Unlike many Hollywood actors who have a unique name, January Jones’ is the real deal. She was named “January” after a character named January Wayne in a novel-turned-movie called Once is Not Enough by Jacqueline Susann. Her two sisters also have interesting names that start with the letter J: Jacey and Jina.

When January Jones was one year old, she and her family moved to Hecla, South Dakota, a small town that had just 400 inhabitants in 1979. They later moved back to Sioux Falls, but January Jones was never very happy there. As soon as she was able (which was right after high school), she moved to New York City to try to get work as a model.

Usually, models are expected to be much taller than January Jones, who has a relatively average height of 5’6”, but she was able to land some impressive modeling gigs, including one with Abercrombie & Fitch. This led to her dating another famous actor, Ashton Kutcher, in the 1990s, when they were both working as models for the clothing brand.

For January Jones, though, modeling was never her true passion. She had only gotten into the business to get out of South Dakota, and so that she wouldn’t have to go to college. Those modeling gigs did eventually lead her to find her real life’s devotion, though: acting.

January Jones got bit by the acting bug when she appeared in a television commercial. Even though she had no formal training in acting and hadn’t done any acting whatsoever in high school, she proved to have a talent for it. She then moved from commercials to television show pilots to a full television series to a movie (All the Rage, an indie film that was never formally released) before she began getting noticed.

Her first role that really gained January Jones some attention was in 2001’s Bandits, in which she seduced Jane Fonda’s son, Troy Garity. While this was by no means a breakout role, it did put her in the company of some of Hollywood’s greats, like Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cate Blanchett.

January Jones then went on to take some more small roles until she was cast in American Wedding, a sequel to American Pie. From there she made it to Mad Men, the role that brought her to the world’s attention. Her portrayal of Betty Draper earned her two Golden Globe nominations as well as an Emmy nomination, and the rest, as they say, is history.
