Are you ready to see? That is the tagline for the new Netflix movie, Bird Box: Barcelona, the sequel to the 2018 film that starred Sandra Bullock. The streaming service just released an exciting new trailer for the horror mystery movie that will surely take us on another violent, psychological thrill ride.

The trailer naturally starts off with a bird in a cage before showing a woman repeatedly smashing her face into a glass door. Crowds of panicked people flood European streets as chaos unfolds around them. Newscasters are puzzled as to why tens of thousands of people are gruesomely and willingly taking their own lives.

For those who have seen the first Bird Box (which was a huge hit on Netflix), they will know that evil, unseen creatures are causing humanity to take their own lives, one at a time. And to make things even worse, if a person looks in the eyes of someone who has been possessed by these evil creatures, then they become crazed too, killing themselves to escape the reality they can no longer comprehend. This sparks mass hysteria and forces the surviving population to blindfold themselves and their loved ones to avoid the horrible fate of the rest of society.

The first Bird Box was based on the novel of the same name written by Josh Malerman. In 2020, he released a sequel entitled Malorie that follows Sandra Bullock’s character as she continues to navigate the new, post-apocalyptic world with her young children. The new Netflix film, Bird Box: Barcelona, will diverge from Josh Malerman’s fictional world as new writers take creative liberty to show how the mysterious horror affects Europe.

In Bird Box: Barcelona, a man named Sebastian and his young daughter, Sophia, must survive the impending apocalypse and fight their way through the deadly streets of Barcelona. As the two try to find safety, they must face even greater evil than the unseen creatures who are causing people to take their own lives. The plot is certainly reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan’s strange horror film The Happening mixed with the wild, unpredictable violence of The Purge film franchise.

Despite being the main character in Bird Box and the focus of Josh Malerman’s second novel, Sandra Bullock is not set to appear in Bird Box: Barcelona. In fact, none of the original cast from the first film (which included stars John Malkovich, Sara Paulson, and Trevante Rhodes) will be in the sequel. Granted, some of them won’t be reprising their roles because their characters were victims of the evil, mind-altering force.

The new lead for Bird Box: Barcelona is Mario Casas, who plays Sebastian. The actor is known for his roles in the action romance Three Steps Above Heaven, the adventure comedy Witching and Bitching, and the horror thriller The Bar. He will perform alongside fellow actors Georgina Campbell, Diego Calva, and Naila Schuberth (who plays his daughter Sophia).

Bird Box: Barcelona will only be available to stream on Netflix on July 14.
