Alicia Vikander Makes An Amazing Captain Janeway For Star Trek: Voyager Reboot, See The Photos

Giant Freakin Robot generated AI artwork of Alicia Vikander as Captain Janeway for a potential Star Trek: Voyager reboot and the Swedish star looks like a great replacement.

Kate Mulgrew broke down barriers as Star Trek’s first female Captain as the lead of a series, but in this age of reboots and remakes, we humbly suggest Alicia Vikander as her replacement for a new Star Trek: Voyager series. The star has demonstrated a wide range of characters in her career, from Lara Croft to Gloria Steinem (peruse her IMDB for the full extent), making her a great fit for the tough but compassionate Kathryn Janeway. Giant Freakin’ Robot staff wondered what this would look like, so we ran it through an AI artwork generator, and the result is amazing.

In the two pieces of artwork, Alicia Vikander even has the right hairstyle to match the original Star Trek: Voyager style of Captain Janeway. The red collar and slit running down the middle don’t feature Janeway’s grey undershirt, but it still works. If a reboot happens, worse casting directions could be taken; for example, even if she seems to be everywhere right now, Jenna Ortega, as Janeway, would not work.

Multiple actresses tried for the part, including Genevive Bujold, who was cast and started filming before dropping out. Kate Mulgrew was the second choice, stepping into a production that was behind schedule and under a tight timetable to finish filming in time for the launch of UPN. Though she failed to get the role initially, it’s now impossible to imagine anyone else who could have done a better job.

Alicia Vikander may not be a big name, but many people recognize her face from her wide range of previous roles, and she could benefit from the increased exposure of a retooled Star Trek: Voyager. Vikander played Ava, the AI created by Oscar Isaac’s Nathan Bateman in Ex Machina, and Gaby Teller in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. opposite Henry Cavill. Could she alternate from helping a new Seven of Nine assimilate with humanity while barking orders to her First Officer Chakotay (Richard Beltran)?

Given her past body of work, the answer is a resounding yes, and while that also asks who would fill Jeri Ryan’s skin-tight suit as the former Borg officer, for now, let’s remain focused on the Captain. Unlike every other Star Trek series, Voyager’s unique premise took the crew out of Federation space and into an unknown quadrant of space, forcing them to think on their feet and deal with situations never covered in the Academy. Thanks to the premise, rebooting the show would be similar to Strange New Worlds, and could be done in any number of ways without impacting the canon timeline.

A future version of Voyager was involved in the series, proving pivotal in getting the ship back to Federation space, setting up Kate Mulgrew to reappear as Admiral Janeway, while Seven of Nine is now part of Star Trek: Picard. What if Alicia Vikander and the possible reboot followed the future ship from a timeline that never saw them return?

Thankfully, there’s no word that Paramount is looking to reboot Star Trek: Voyager, a series that wasn’t well-liked at the time but has grown in esteem over the past few decades. Unfortunately, following the cancelation of Star Trek: Discovery, which wasn’t sad news, the franchise’s future again looks barren. Star Trek: Picard is ending in a few weeks, leaving open the possibility for new stories further along the timeline featuring a new crew, a new ship, and an old mission to boldly go where no one has gone before.
