A Rotten Tomatoes 100% Show Just Got Snubbed By The Emmys
In spite of being nominated for seven Primetime Emmys, Showtime's Yellowjackets didn't bring home a single trophy.
The 2022 Emmys have come and gone, which means many shows and actors have the awards they’ve long-deserved and other shows and actors have been completely and utterly snubbed. While the 2022 Emmys were relatively unsurprising, a spunky newcomer with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes didn’t receive a single award. Showtime‘s Yellowjackets, though beloved by critics and audiences alike, didn’t take home any of the trophies this year.
It’s not like Yellowjackets was lacking in the department of nominations. The series was nominated for seven awards including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Melanie Lynskey, Oustanding Directing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Christina Ricci. The series ended up getting snubbed in every category.
With all that being said, this could definitely be a case of the new kid on the block going up against the top dogs. Yellowjackets lost to the always incredible Succession in both the Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Writing categories. In the Oustanding Directing category, the series lost to the unstoppable Squid Game, which was a shoo-in for at least a few wins.
As for the Oustanding Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress categories, Yellowjackets had to make room for some actresses who have put the time in. Zendaya took home her second win for Oustanding Actress in a Drama for her affecting performance as Rue in Euphoria. Meanwhile, Julia Garner took home her third and last possible Emmy for playing Ruth Langmore in the final season of Ozark.
While Yellowjackets fans are probably disappointed with the Emmy snubs, the series is in good snubbed company. The Apple TV sci-fi Severance didn’t take home any wins in major categories despite its 14 nominations (though it took home some during the Creative Arts Ceremonies for score and title design). Only Murders in the Building, which received an incredible 17 nominations, also missed out on any major wins — though it did nab sound mixing, production design, and best guest comedy actor for Nathan Lane.
The good news for Yellowjackets is that it has time on its side. As long as the series continues to put out quality seasons — including the upcoming Season 2 — it could definitely have its day at the Emmys. One series that doesn’t have time on its side is Better Call Saul, which somehow has gone through six seasons without a single win. Better Call Saul has been nominated 46 times but somehow the voters have not deemed it to be worthy yet.
Fortunately, Better Call Saul will have one last shot, as the second half of its final season will be eligible for the next Emmy ceremony. Hopefully, Better Call Saul and Yellowjackets will both get their due when the 75th annual Emmy Awards hits our screens. In the meantime, we’ll get to see if Yellowjackets can maintain the same level of quality when the second season premieres in the near future.
The new season will feature some new faces including Lauren Ambrose, Elijah Wood, and Simone Kessell. Yellowjackets haven’t announced a release date yet for their new season, but we’ll let you know as soon as they do. Until then, we’ll just have to keep guessing who the Antler Queen might be.
