Patrick Stewart will always be seen as an icon for many reasons, and one of those is thanks to his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as subsequent appearances in other Star Trek shows and projects. He will be returning as the character in the second season of the streaming series Star Trek: Picard, but a new report seems to point towards another potential Star Trek project on the horizon. And this one would see him meet up with another recent major character in the Star Trek universe.

According to We Got This Covered, CBS is trying to craft a project that will see Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard crossover with Star Trek: Discovery lead character Michael Burnham played by Sonequa Martin-Green. The source that gave We Got This Covered this information did not clarify exactly what the project would be or if it would involve one character showing up on another’s current show. Regardless, it seems clear that CBS wants to have these two characters meet on-screen and share some significant time together. Just how that will happen remains to be seen.

It would certainly be exciting to see Patrick Stewart and Sonequa Martin-Green get to act together as their Star Trek characters. They are great actors and would certainly be able to showcase their talents together. However, we have to wonder just what kind of particular story would have to be crafted in order to get these two characters together for some kind of sci-fi adventure. And considering that fan reactions to the last season of Star Trek: Discovery and the first season of Star Trek: Picard have not been exactly great, it would take a truly compelling plot and premise to get fans excited to see Jean-Luc Picard and Michael Burnham share screen time.

One also has to wonder just how much longer Patrick Stewart plans to play Jean-Luc Picard in any Star Trek projects. The celebrated actor will be turning 81-years-old later this year. Exactly how much steam he has left in the tank for the kind of demands a Star Trek project asks of its talent is unclear. That could be a major reason why CBS is trying to get Jean-Luc Picard to show up in a project with Michael Burnham. It could potentially act as an official way to pass the torch to Sonequa Martin-Green as a new figurehead for the franchise. If that is the case, it would be billed as one of the most major events in Star Trek history. Seeing Patrick Stewart say goodbye to the character in a big project would be extremely notable for fans of the property.

We will have to wait and see what kind of project CBS has in mind to bring together Patrick Stewart and Sonequa Martin-Green. If they do end up moving forward with this plan, they will have to market it as something truly momentous in Star Trek’s canon. If they do, perhaps it will encourage lapsed fans to give the new era of the franchise a look. And if it does end up being the last time we get to see Jean-Luc Picard, it will be an event many fans will not miss.
