Chris Evans To Return As Captain America For A Specific Marvel Movie Project

Chris Evans made an indelible mark as Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America, and fans have been understandably bummed that they might never see him again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if you thought you’d seen the last of Steve Rogers as he stared thoughtfully and almost romantically off in the distance on that park bench in Avengers: Endgame, think again. Rumors are starting to circulate that Chris Evans could, in fact, return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Over the summer, the Russo Brothers, the brains and creative trust behind arguably four of the best MCU movies – Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame – began hinting at the possibility of the adapting Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars. and it sounds like Chris Evans would have a role to play in that adaptation.
Secret Wars originally came out as a 12-issue story arc back in 1984 and explored an alternate universe in which the Beyonder transports seemingly the entirety of the Marvel Comic Universe (villains and heroes) to his planet pitting them in a last-man/woman-standing type of battle royal. The series featured not just The Avengers, but also the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and many others including most of the respective groups’ nemeses.
Currently, speculation is the Secret Wars arc would be akin to an Avengers 5 but the character scope could well exceed even those massive movies. There are many reasons to get excited about this venture and what it could mean for a rebooted Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering how many new characters and storylines could be added to the mix with the adaptation of this storyline, there’s almost no chance it could fit into just one movie. It would likely play out over a number of different movies and Disney+ shows to establish each group’s motivations and struggles prior to and after entering the Beyonder’s Battleworld.
In the latest rumor mill sourcing, Chris Evans would join this group as Captain America but still as the older man version of Steve Rogers. This could take on something like even more a fatherly presence in the universe and a chance to bring along the character as more a sage type than a vim and vigor fighter we’ve known him to be.
We saw this happening during many parts of the MCU with Rogers and Stark wrestling over control of the Avengers and acting as defacto leaders of the group. Rogers often took on the weight of tougher decision making with a leaning towards virtue as a guiding hand. Bringing him back in a diminished physical role – though I guess we can never fully count out Captain America – and more of a mentor would be a great character turn and begin establishing the new version of the MCU as something completely separate from what came before.
This arc would also make a lot of sense for the character considering he played out his timeline in the Endgame. It also helps expand the world to begin including characters we didn’t see in the four phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Again, this casting is merely a rumor at this point, but it also includes the possibility of a return for Tony Stark especially if the Beyonder is able to control different timelines and other aspects of the time continuum. We’ve seen the MCU play liberally with the ideas behind time and permanence. Nothing is ever absolute in this universe and it leaves so many possibilities open to which characters can take part going forward.
When we last saw Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers/Captain America, he was sitting on a bench as an old man just “seconds” after being sent back in time to restore the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines. He was supposed to accomplish the mission and hop right back to the “present” next to Bruce Banner/Hulk and Sam Wilson/Falcon.
But old man Steve had a different plan, using his jump back in time to reconnect with the love of his life Peggy Carter. It was a touching and sweet moment for the character and Chris Evans as an actor, even down to the part where he doesn’t want to give Sam the full details about the life he’d chosen to live.
In many ways, it felt like the perfect ending for the Chris Evans-as-Steve Rogers character considering he’d given up so much of his past after being locked in the ice after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. His character always struggled with the things he’d lost along the way.
Sign me up for Chris Evans as an old man version of Steve. Who wouldn’t love to see Captain America bringing a whole new vibe to a cast of younger Marvel characters?
