Sci-Fi Speed Dating TV Show Coming To TLC

I’m of the opinion that it’s kind of a bad idea for nerds to marry each other. You’re probably better off with a tolerant, non-nerd girl who can give you a reality check, now and then. But for every nerd who dreams of one day finding that all too rare and elusive, super hot nerd girl… TLC is ready to fulfill your fantasies.

The network is planning a new reality dating show, entirely for geeks. Unlike Beauty and the Geek, which tried to pair nerds with non-nerd girls, this show combs the world for top of the line geek-girls to pair with your average, wookie-lovin geek dude.

Here’s the trailer for the show, called Geek Love, in which the nerds do a round of Sci-Fi Speed Dating:

My biggest fear here is that, like so many of the modern media world’s attempt to cash in on geek culture, this will actually end up going The Big Bang Theory route and mostly use the premise to make fun of nerds. Granted, it’s hard not to make fun of a guy who when confronted with a super hot girl in a slutty costume is only interested in asking her if she likes Star Wars (At least come up with something more obscure, you asshole. Ask her if she’s a Farscape fan.), but making fun of geeks is too much like shooting fish in a barrel.

I’m also a little sick of seeing guys in Darth Vader costumes standing around every time anyone does anything that has to do with geeks. Hahaha yes we get it geeks like Darth Vader. Seriously, Lucasfilm should sue some of these assholes.

Be better than that, Geek Love, when you premiere December 18th at 9pm.

Bah, Big Bang Theory is *hysterical*, because THEY as the nerds themselves, make fun of themselves- just like most nerds who recognize the truth do. (Because nerds have great senses of humor.)

The only time it’s sad is when a nerd is unaware they are a nerd.

I also take issue with use of the term “geek”- geek and nerd are *not* interchangeable, despite being used so too often. A geek is anyone obsessed and highly knowledgeable about any topic. You could be a law geek, a coffee geek, or a comic book geek. Being a geek in no way equates to being a nerd, though. Nerds have some form of social disconnect where the line between blending in with what’s considered “normal” (so far as normal goes) in society is crossed, knowingly or not. A nerd doesn’t have to dress horrible or be a complete social loser. It’s just someone who takes that approach in life where less-than-popular concepts are loved and discussed beyond a normal level.

It’s a much more fine line than it used to be… but ultimately, there’s nothing negative about being a nerd (and there’s never been anything wrong with being a geek, per modern definition). It is the age of the geeks and nerds, united!

    Signed,
A proud creative writing / Prince / technology geek.

Completely agree with you about geek vs. nerd.

I would classify most of the people in this video as nerds, not geeks. Which is why I made a point of trying to use “nerd” more even though the show keeps calling them “geeks”. Geeks usually have no problem getting dates.

Disagree about Big Bang Theory. To me the whole show is based on the idea “haha aren’t loser nerds so funny?” That’s what they start with, and that’s where they lose me. All the jokes revolve around how strange/lame/stupid nerds are. That sucks.

I suspect that’s also most of the reason people tune in. Most of the people who watch, aren’t nerds, and watch because they want to laugh at nerds. Real nerds watch Community.
