Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Gameplay Trailer Will Buckle Your Swash

There are a lot of things I love about the Assassin’s Creed games, but chief among them is that they drop you into settings and time periods that you don’t see all that often, especially in modern triple-A games. The Holy Land during the Crusades. Renaissance Italy. Revolutionary America. Next up we’ll get to shiver our timbers as pirates in this fall’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Check out the new gameplay trailer up above if you haven’t already.

Black Flag casts you as Captain Edward Kenway, a former privateer turned pirate…and somewhere along the way, an Assassin. This of course pits him against the authorities there in the Caribbean, and we can probably assume that many of those authorities will have Templar loyalties. The new trailer shows off several of the game’s bullet points, including expanded ship-to-ship combat, which we got a taste of in Assassin’s Creed III, swimming/exploring underwater, and lots and lots of stabbing dudes with hidden blades. Also, apparently you may get to punch a shark. Better that than jumping it.

I’ll be interested to see how/if they still incorporate any of the science fiction-y Assassin vs. Templar storyline now that Desmond’s is wrapped up, or if they’re just abandon the whole Animus construct and just focus on the past gameplay. Frankly, either alternative works for me. And hey, there’s also that movie that’s in the works…

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be releases for current-gen and next-gen consoles in late 2013, as well as for PC.
