As expectations go, I am constantly going back and forth on my feelings towards Oblivion. On one hand, it looks like it could be a stellar sci-fi movie starring Tom Cruise, and on the other, it looks like well-worn material at play. We will certainly find out whether Oblivion is smarter than it appears to be this April. Until then, Universal released a new featurette about the film’s Sky Tower base station. The way Joseph Konsinki brought the Sky Tower to life may surprise most viewers. Watch the new featurette below:

The featurette was premiered over at IGN, and it shows the marvelous Sky Tower and how it was made. It’s very surprising to see Kosinski use (almost) practical effects in the background. His production team could’ve easily used green screen and CGI technology to bring the Sky Tower to life, but he decided to go practically so his actors could interact with their environment.

Set in the distant future, Oblivion unfolds after a war between humans and aliens has left the planet is all but unlivable. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is a lonely, blue-collar mechanic stationed on Earth to repair downed drones. After a space pod crash lands on Earth, Harper rescues a beautiful woman named Julia (Olga Kurylenko), but her identity unlocks mysteries about Jack’s past and existence as a whole. He becomes the key to human survival.

The new science fiction film features actors Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, and Zoë Bell. Oblivion will hit theaters everywhere on April 12th, and in IMAX theaters on April 19th.
