Nathan Fillion Teases Guardians Of The Galaxy Cameo And Has Epic Lightsaber Battle

One of the bigger draws of the event was a mini-Firefly reunion panel with Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, and Alan Tudyk, and it was an entirely somber, serious affair, free from jokes or any fun at all. I’m kidding, of course. Not only did they share a bunch of candid behind-the-scenes stories, but Fillion took it upon himself to turn Internet speculation on its head by hinting at a cameo he may or may not have in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Oh, and he also took part in one of the most epic lightsaber battles imaginable, but we’ll get to that in a second.

Late in the panel, during the Q&A portion, a woman in the audience asked Fillion if he had wanted to get a part in Guardians of the Galaxy, since he has worked with director James Gunn in the past. The always-joking Fillion then blew some minds by saying, “Wanting to get a part…or maybe did,” which was followed by a room full of surprised murmurs. He then stretched it out even further by telling the fans, “I’m just saying maybe. Maybe you’ll be surprised. Maybe.”

He then told the inquirer to “check the credits,” which is itself a reference to the early part of her question, when she chidingly tells him he should check his IMDb page when he pretends not to have known about his past with Gunn. So did he concoct the entire answer just to poke fun at her? Or is he maybe poking fun at people like me who inevitably end up treating this as huge news on the off chance that he wasn’t just bullshitting everyone? Or is he actually in the damned movie, which has been prone to coy casting reveals, like with Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper’s voice roles as Groot and Rocket Raccoon, respectively. Rumors of his joining the cast started back when Gunn was first announced as director, but Fillion said at the time that he was committed to his Castle schedule. That just means he couldn’t have taken a larger part, obviously, but there’s always room and time for a Fillion cameo. In anything. You can watch the entire panel on the shaky video, taken from a monitor, below.

It’s unclear whether or not this next thing had anything to do with Fillion’s announcement—it definitely didn’t—but St. Louis was also home to a lightsaber battle between Fillion, Tudyk, and actor Sean Astin, perhaps best known as Samwise from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings franchise. It was Astin himself who sent out the image below via Twitter. I’ll let him tell you who won.
