homemade Pacific Rim trailerAs we get closer to the release of Pacific Rim, the latest film from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro could — if there’s any justice — be one of the biggest movies of the summer. Fan anticipation and excitement is high for the movie that pits giant robots against giant alien sea monsters. It turns out combining that excitement with a little bit of creativity can pay off.

A few months ago, Internet video team Dumb Drum launched their latest homemade movie trailer on their YouTube channel. Apparently Guillermo del Toro loved the trailer re-creation and took the opportunity to thank Dumb Drum for their impressive work. The 48-year-old director took his thank you one step further and invited the Dumb Drum duo to the Pacific Rim world premiere in Hollywood.

Brodie Mash and Bryan Harley make up the Internet video collective dubbed Dumb Drum. They make homemade versions of movie trailers such as Iron Man 3, The Avengers, and the aforementioned Pacific Rim. Brodie Mash used Reddit to talk about his experience meeting Guillermo del Toro at this year’s WonderCon in Anaheim, California. Apparently del Toro personally thanked them while he was on stage during the Pacific Rim panel. Del Toro even said that the Dumb Drum video was the inspiration for one of the official Pacific Rim trailers, which he later introduced to the WonderCon audience.

After the Pacific Rim panel, Guillermo del Toro was signing autographs for his many fans attending the comic book convention. When Mash and Harley were at the front of the line, Mash told del Toro they were the guys who made the homemade trailer he talked about on stage. Guillermo del Toro then smiled, chuckled, and walked around the table to give them both a big bear hug. The trio talked for some time, while the long line of Pacific Rim fans was waiting to get their Guillermo del Toro autographs.

Del Toro then asked the Dumb Drum pair if they were going to the Pacific Rim world premiere. Mash and Harley asked if they were invited, which prompted del Toro to respond, “Ah huevo van a venir!” which roughly translates to “Fuck yes, you guys are coming.” They got their picture taken with the jolly Mexican director, which was then later tweeted from Warner Bros.’ official Twitter account.

Needless to say, Brodie Mash and Bryan Harley were extremely happy with their homemade trailer and their meeting with Guillermo del Toro. A few days later, they did indeed receive invitations to the Pacific Rim world premiere in Hollywood.

Pacific Rim will hit theaters on July 12, in 3D and IMAX.
