Thanos’ Shadowy Role In Guardians Of The Galaxy Has Been Revealed

ThanosIn 2012, when the credits rolled on Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the film going world scratched their collective heads and asked, “Who the hell was that big scary dude out in space?” Fans of the comics were well aware that we were looking at Thanos, something everyone else soon figured out as well. Since then we’ve learned that the Mad Titan, as he is also known, is going to play a big part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. That role is going to start in earnest when the comic book studio drops James Gunn’s adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy later this summer, and we’re learning just how big a part he will play in that movie.

We knew that Thanos would be in the film, and played by a different actor than the one at the end of The Avengers. In fact, with less than two months until Guardians hits theaters, Josh Brolin was just cast in the role, which is fantastic news, because Brolin is incredible. He won’t be the key villain this time out, more of an overarching enemy over the course of multiple movies. He has touched the lives of many of the Guardians team, most notably Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax (Dave Bautista), as well as some of the film’s antagonists, especially Karen Gillan’s Nebula.

ThanosLast summer, The Avengers hinted at the direction Marvel’s Cinematic Universe would take in Phase Two. A mysterious purple-skinned alien cracked a smile to the audience to usher in a new era of cosmic Marvel movies. The alien was the Mad Titan Thanos, the personification of death and mortality.

After the announcement that Marvel was making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it was assumed that he would play a role in that, and also might be the main villain in The Avengers 2. But when Joss Whedon announced that the new title for The Avengers sequel would be Age of Ultron, that line of thinking seemed to be out the window. When will Thanos make actually get a proper introduction in the Marvel movies after being teased in the first Avengers film? Apparently, we could see the Mad Titan in Phase Three, as the main villain in The Avengers 3.

During the press junket for Thor: The Dark World, Marvel producer and president Kevin Feige hinted at the whereabouts of and plans for Thanos. Kofi Outlaw from ScreenRant surmised that the clues such as the Tesseract in Phase One led to Loki’s mind-control scepter in The Avengers. Phase Two also has clues and items that will lead to the robot villain Ultron, so it seems that the same setup in Phase Three could lead to the Infinity Gauntlet, which made a brief appearance in the first Thor movie in 2011.
