New Fringe Viral Video Reminds You Of The Rules

Fringe if full of creepy creatures, spooky occurrences, and sinister plots. And no one embodies all three of these quite like the Observers. If you don’t believe me, check out the latest eerie viral video for the fifth and final season of Fox’s sci-fi police drama.

“Heed, obey, serve,” is the motto of the day for those pasty, bald, fedora enthusiasts.

We know that at least a large portion of this season of Fringe takes place in the year 2036. The Observers — who themselves are from even further in the future, where they have finally rendered the Earth uninhabitable for humans — have travelled back in time, taken over, and established a totalitarian state. Most of the Fringe team has been frozen in amber, but Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia’s (Anna Torv) daughter, Henrietta (Georgina Haig), frees them in order to fight the power.

This latest video reinforces the Orwellian nature of Fringe‘s future, and it has a serious Big-Brother-is-watching-you vibe. The heavy, ominous drone of the music combines with the “native rights” message that simultaneously extols certain freedoms while grinding in the true scale of the domination, to create an overall atmosphere of subjugation. Occasional blips interrupt the message with radical subliminal blurbs. Presumably the forces working against the oppressive regime placed these communiqués, you know, the kind of folks the Fringe team will be working with in the future. My mind immediately runs to the Eyes-Only broadcasts from Dark Angel, but my mind always goes to Dark Angel.

Season five will see a drastic shift in venue, but so far the producers have done a nice job setting the stage. The episode “Letters of Transit” last year introduced viewers to the world, and much of the promo material building up to the final chapter has focused on building and expanding on those ideas and surroundings. If any show can successfully pull off such a change, Fringe is it.

Season five of Fringe premieres Friday, September 28th. It’s exciting to think about how close that date actually is.
