Last year’s arrival of Top Gun: Maverick reinvigorated the film industry and breathed new life into the box office following the COVID-19 pandemic slump. Because of his leading part in the Joseph Kosinski-helmed high-octane feature, Tom Cruise took part of that responsibility, after Steven Spielberg praised the him and the rest of the team behind the sequel for saving Hollywood. Now, a year later, Cruise’s latest film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One only took in $56.2 million domestically on its opening weekend.

Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One took in an underwhelming $56.2 million domestically at the box office this weekend.

According to Variety, although the seventh installment in the Tom Cruise-led franchise was a top earner over its opening weekend, the numbers still didn’t manage to scratch the surface of what the team was expecting to put in the bank. The film cost somewhere around $300 million for production costs alone before marketing, making a $56.2 million opener fall below expectations.

With those backing the production hoping to break the franchise record held by 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, not only did they not hit their target but they also fell behind 2000’s Mission: Impossible II

The good news for the summer blockbuster hopeful is that it still has plenty of time left in cinemas and is already raking in shining reviews from critics and sites such as Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore.

Likewise, Tom Cruise is holding his own against other leading men like Harrison Ford whose latest Disney feature, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is one of the season’s biggest box office blunders. At $302 million worldwide, things aren’t looking great for the film’s base production budget of $300 million after a few weeks in theaters.

While audiences already had their doubts about the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, there’s something about Tom Cruise that had audiences and critics chirping with excitement long before Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was released.

Known for doing his own stunts, we’ve seen plenty of featurettes and teasers that show off what it was like for filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie and the rest of the team to work with the thrill-seeking star. Seeing that hard work and dedication play out on the big screen is just another reason for fans to flock to theaters over the next few weeks, driving the box office numbers up higher and higher.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise reprises the role of his beloved character, Ethan Hunt, on yet another high-stakes mission that includes motorcycles, skydiving, trains, and plenty of explosions.

The feature also stars a killer cast that includes Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Henry Czerny, and Rob Delaney.

However, looming just around the corner, Tom Cruise and the rest of his team will be going up against two more highly-anticipated films with lineups of A-list actors when Barbie and Oppenheimer explode into theaters this weekend. With the top box office numbers up for grabs, it’s anyone’s game from here on out.
