Are you ready for Matrix 4? The highly anticipated fourth installment in the popular franchise has been shrouded in secrecy as of late. But now that the film is only six months the supposed title of the Keanu Reeves movie has been leaked on social media.

If the rumors are true, the movie will be called The Matrix Resurrections and has been described as “weird, meta, engrossing, surprisingly funny, and ambitious to a fault.” The information was shared on Twitter by regular test screening attendee, David Manning who supposedly attended a focus group screening of Matrix 4.

While it’s still speculation for now, as a title, The Matrix Resurrections does make sense since the film features characters that died in the previous movies. In terms of confirmed news, this is what we know so far…

Announced in August 2019, Matrix 4 is co-written, directed, and produced by Lana Wachowski, who worked on the three previous films with her sister Lilly. For the new film, Lana shares scriptwriting duties with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The project also has Warner Bros. partnering with Village Roadshow once more.

The new movie will see stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively. Other returning cast members include Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, who she played in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

But Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving will not be returning as Morpheus and Agent Smith. Gina Torres, who played Cas in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, will also be missing from the upcoming Matrix installment.

A few new actors have also been confirmed to appear alongside Keanu Reeves.

Aquaman and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast in an undisclosed role in Matrix 4, with rumors suggesting he could be playing a younger version of Morpheus. How I Met Your Mother alum, Neil Patrick Harris has a significant role in the movie and has had nothing but good things to say about the filming process.

Marvel star Jessica Henwick landed a leading role and will share the screen with Jonathan Groff of Mindhunter fame, Spartacus alum Ellen Hollman, iZombie actor Andrew Caldwell, Baywatch actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Stephen Graham. Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Brian J. Smith, Ellen Hollman, and Christina Ricci have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

There is currently no information about the plot for the movie, but Keanu Reeves was spotted on set in Berlin and San Francisco showcasing a completely different look for Neo. Additionally, the actor described Matrix 4 as a “love story” during an appearance on BBC’s The One Show in 2020.

The first movie in the Matrix trilogy was released in 1999. It was groundbreaking in its idea of reality and the introduction of “bullet time”. After critical acclaim and astounding box office success it was followed by two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003.

Matrix 4 is currently scheduled for release worldwide on December 22, 2021.
