As the Barbie movie premiere of July 21 draws nearer and nearer, the press has been running wild with a number of stories surrounding the film’s production and its incredible fan hype. According to a write-up in Deadline regarding the film’s behind-the-scenes details, director Greta Gerwig originally planned to have cameo appearances from frequent collaborators Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan in the film. Though the Barbie schedule prevented the reunion, Gerwig has expressed that she would love to collaborate with the pair again.

Timothee Chalamet was supposed to have a cameo appearance in Barbie but scheduling conflicts kept him from reuniting with director Greta Gerwig.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular plastic plaything, alongside Ryan Gosling’s Ken. With a star-studded cast including Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Rhea Pearlman, Will Ferrell, and Marvel‘s Simu Liu, it’s hard to imagine the film being any more stacked with talent than it already is. According to director Greta Gerwig, however, the film very nearly had special guest appearances from Golden Globe winners Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet.

Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan previously worked with Gerwig on critically acclaimed films such as 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women, marking the pair as frequent collaborators of the writer/director.

Of course, with both of the actors’ careers blowing up in recent years, securing them for a Barbie cameo proved too difficult to cram into the schedule. Despite their absence from the film, it’s not hard to picture how the incredibly talented and conventionally attractive pair would fit right in amongst Barbie’s home world of perfectly pink landscapes and wide open floor plans.

Timothee Chalamet has become a Hollywood icon, with one of the most jam-packed schedules of any leading man currently working.

For Saoirse Ronan, her schedule has been almost entirely eaten up by her latest responsibilities as a producer. Ronan is set to produce and star in the upcoming film The Outrun, which sees her portraying a young woman who returns to her home on the wild Orkney Islands after spending ten years growing ever distant, reforging connections with her childhood home while freshly out of rehab and still battling addiction.

Conversely, Timothee Chalamet has become a Hollywood icon, with one of the most jam-packed schedules of any leading man currently working.

Timothee Chalamet is currently busy starring in three films in active stages of production, including a Willy Wonka origin story titled Wonka, as well as the upcoming Dune: Part Two. Despite the fact that both films are projected to be major blockbusters, Chalamet somehow found time in his schedule to star as a young Bob Dylan in an upcoming biopic about the iconic 82-year-old singer-songwriter titled A Complete Unknown.

Timothee Chalamet has multiple films coming out this year with Dune: Part Two and Wonka.

Despite how delightful it could have been to see a reunion between the perennial Greta Gerwig collaborators, it makes perfect sense that the pair of highly in-demand actors couldn’t make the Barbie film fit into their schedules. Of course, there’s always hope that Timothee Chalamet could appear in any sequels that may arise, as the Barbie film is expected to perform incredibly well despite this year’s abysmal box office landscape.

Mattel currently has plans in the works to adapt dozens of toy brands into film adaptations, meaning there’s still plenty of time to get the young star on board.
