Stranger Things Just Showed Up In Award-Winning Crime Series

Boasting an all-star cast of talent, including Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, Season 5 of Fargo already had fans talking before its premiere in late November. But, as eagle-eye Stranger Things stans have likely already noticed, the latest episode, titled “Insolubilia” tilted its hat at Keery’s character, Steve Harrington. Paying homage in the best way possible, Keery’s Fargo character, Gator Tillman, picks up a bat covered in nails – directly paralleling Steve’s weapon used to take down those pesky Demogorgons.

Joe Keery As Gator In Fargo

While there are no creatures from the Upside Down afoot in his latest project, the Stranger Things star’s character does find himself trying to prove his worth to his Sheriff father, played by Hamm. In the Fargo scene in question, Harrington’s Gator wields the sharp bat in an attempt to intimidate Juno Temple’s Dot Lyon. A woman on the run, Dot is caught in Gator and his crew’s crosshairs, attempting to make a break for it while Gator swings his crude weapon to put an end to her life on the lam.

An Unplanned Connection

We won’t ruin the rest for you, but, for those who know the dark humor that Fargo (both the series and the film) is known for, it won’t come as a surprise to know that the following moments erupt into a circus. Speaking with TV Insider, Fargo’s creator, Noah Hawley, said that the weapon connection between Gator and Steve wasn’t something that was planned. Instead, Hawley says that, while the parallel to Stranger Things is obvious, it just went with the flow of Fargo to toss into the plot.

More Pop Culture Nods In Fargo Season 5

Calling the bit “a great scene,” Hawley goes into the writing process that saw the dark but silly creation of the show’s “zombie killer.” While he’s amped to hear what Ross and Matt Duffer, the duo behind Stranger Things, may say about this unintentional nod to the sci-fi series, Hawley admits that he and Keery “didn’t really talk about it” during filming.

Already using his latest project to give shoutouts to the films that inspired his career, Hawley included a throwback moment to Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in one of this season’s earlier episodes.

Fargo Season 5’s Cast

Having won a slew of awards, including Emmys and Golden Globes, during its four-season run, it wasn’t a huge shock that FX chose to renew the dark crime comedy-drama for a fifth season. Along with Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, and the aforementioned Juno Temple and Jon Hamm, the latest installment of Fargo also features performances by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lamorne Morris, David Rysdahl, Richa Moorjani, Dave Foley, and Sam Spruell.

Stranger Things Season 5

As for the production that put Joe Keery on the map, he’ll soon begin production on the fifth and final season of Netflix’s hit series, Stranger Things. Over the last four installments in the series, audiences have come to love Keery’s Steve Harrington, who has bravely battled alongside his friends against every sinister creature the Upside Down has thrown at them. While no release date has yet been set for Stranger Things Season 5, you can now get caught up with Fargo which is streaming via FX on Hulu.
