Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Not Solve That To Be Continued For A Very Long Time

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3

There is good news and some potentially bad news for fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The first bit of good news actually came back in March when Paramount+ jumped the Season 2 premiere by announcing Strange New Worlds will definitely be back for Season 3.

Of course, this leads us to our potential bad news – the combined Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA strikes. That could leave fans waiting a very, very long time before they actually get season 3. With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ending on a cliffhanger, it’s going to be a particularly long and arduous wait.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Possible Season 3 Plot

No doubt fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds were on the edge of their collective seats as the Season 2 finale ended. It left the crew of the Enterprise in a dire situation.

Key Enterprise crewmembers like Ortega and M’Benga have just been kidnapped by the Gorn. Catpain Patel has been infested with Gorn eggs and currently sits unconscious and under sedation in the Enterprise sickbay. The Enterprise is surrounded on all sides by Gorn ships and Starfleet has just ordered Captain Pike to abandon his capture crew and retreat.

Season 2 ends with Captain Pike totally befuddled, terrified, and indecisive. He looked like this…

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns for season 3, it’ll have a lot to resolve.

Beyond that immediate danger, the entire Season 2 also set up multiple storylines heading into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3.

One of the biggest and perhaps most anticipated storylines will be the arrival of Nurse Christine Chapel’s (Jess Bush) future fiancé., Dr. Roger Korby (Michael Strong). Korby figures prominently in an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.

We know so far that in Strange New Worlds Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), received word that she has been accepted for a fellowship to work alongside Dr. Korby. She was on her way there when the Gorn attack occurred.

During Star Trek: The Original Series, it was divulged that Korby and Chapel’s romance turned into an engagement, but that was cut short when Korby ended up going missing. Presumably, this and Korby’s return is going to be further explored, possibly ending in heartbreak for a couple of characters.

James T. Kirk
Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk

Strange New Worlds has also set up more potential blockbuster season 3 storylines. These include Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) and his impending fatherhood, as well as his promotion to Commander of the USS Farragut.

Next would be the storyline following Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun). He has some very dark secrets about his past in the Klingon War that appear to be rearing their ugly heads.

Martin Quinn as Scotty

One more possibility that could tickle fans of Star Trek: The Original Series is the further development of a young Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). Scott showed up in the Season 2 finale and when we last saw him he was going to work as an assistant to the Enterprise’s current Chief Engineer.

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 we may get to see a young Scotty as he learns and grows into the position of the Enterprise’s Chief Engineer. Remember, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place 6 years before Kirk and company take charge of the Enterprise, so there are still plenty of stories to tell about Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew.

With the way things were left in the season 2 finale, we can assume a number of returning characters for season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. These include Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Paul Wesley, Dan Jeannotte, and Carol Kane.

It’s likely we’ll also see Martin Quinn back as Scotty.

Behind the scenes, you can expect Goldsman and Myers to return based on their fantastic job with the show so far.

Season 3’s Release Date Is Being Massively Delayed

The Writer’s and Actor’s strike. The WGA strike has been ongoing since May 2, 2023, with still no signs of letting up. The SAG-AFTRA strike joined two months later, hitting the picket lines on July 14, 2023. The two have been in lockstep ever since.

Until both of these matters come to their conclusion, Hollywood has gone dark. There are no productions currently running other than the few projects SAG-AFTRA has allowed to continue production.

This is particularly disastrous for Strange New Worlds, since the show should be in heavy production right now if it plans to return for Season 3 next year. That isn’t happening, which means you should not expect to see Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 in the first half of 2024, the way previous seasons have been released.

So when will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds be released? Right now the next season has no official release date, but at the earliest, expect it in very late 2024, perhaps not even until 2025. You could be waiting two years to see what happens after that “To Be Continued” at the end of Season 2.

Where To Watch Strange New Worlds Season 3

All of seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are streaming on Paramount+. While you are there and have shot through each season consisting of 10 episodes, you may also want to scoot on over and check out all 3 seasons of Star Trek: Picard.

This may tide you over until Strange New Worlds goes back into production. Once Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is complete, expect to find it airing on Paramount+ just like the show’s previous seasons.
