Paramount released the first trailer for the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery at San Diego Comic-Con. The five-minute clip sees Captain Michael Burnham (portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green) chasing down some bad guys in possession of a stolen treasure. Things get complicated with Burnham navigating a hull breach, spacewalking on a mid-warp vessel, and much more.

These Star Trek: Discovery villains are relentless in their pursuit of a very specific artifact.

Fortunately, Burnham was assisted by Captain Rayner (played by Callum Keith Rennie) and the USS Mutari crew. However, his help revealed a concerning vengeful side of Star Trek’s newest Starfleet Captain, which may lead to complications later in Star Trek: Discovery’s final season. The bad guys in the clip, Moll and L’ak, are portrayed by Eve Harlow and Elias Toufexis, respectively.

Described as formidable outlaws, these Star Trek: Discovery villains are relentless in their pursuit of a very specific artifact. For now, their motivations remain ambiguous as it is unclear if the pair serves a higher authority with intentions to dominate the galaxy using the treasure. L’ak is known for his fierce protectiveness of Moll, making him a dangerous adversary for the USS Discovery crew.

Captain Rayner comes across as a stern Starfleet commander who firmly believes in keeping a professional distance from his crew. His approach starkly contrasts Burnham’s familial dynamic aboard the USS Discovery. The differences between Rayner and Burnham could be a way for each character to grow as leaders. However, it also has the potential to create conflict and tension.

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Discovery debuted on Paramount in 2017. Per IMDb, the series chronicles the voyages of Starfleet as they discover new worlds and new life forms approximately ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. In season one, the Klingon houses team up against the United Federation of Planets.

In season two, after the war has ended, Star Trek: Discovery focuses on seven mysterious signals and a strange figure known as the “Red Angel.” The series ends with the Starfleet crew traveling to the 32nd century. Season three follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they travel 900 years into the future and learn that Starfleet has been all but destroyed by an event called “The Burn.”

Star Trek: Discovery’s fourth season picks up right after the conclusion of season three, with Michael Burnham assuming her role in the Captain’s chair. Along with Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, the series also stars Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, David Ajala, and Blu del Barrio.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Development for the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery began in March 2020 with the intention of filming it back-to-back with season four. However, the Covid-19 pandemic led to a change of plans. The official order for the fifth season came in January 2022, with filming taking place in Toronto, Canada, from June to November.

In March 2023, Paramount announced that season five would mark the series’ final installment. Additional filming was subsequently planned to ensure a more satisfying conclusion to the show. Star Trek: Discovery season five will debut on Paramount+ in early 2024.
