The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet…The Lone Gunmen?: Today In Science Fiction

LoneTurtlesWe’ve seen some weird mash-ups over the years, and comic books has been home to quite a few of them. I still remember reading a truly bizarre Star Trek/X-Men crossover series in my teens and wondering, “Why?” Sure, I like both Star Trek and the X-Men, but did I have any desire to see them team up? Not really. Plus, this is the sort of thing that can come off like bad fan-fiction unless handled very, very deftly. So I’m more than a little dubious about IDW’s X-Files: Conspiracy crossover event, the latest issue of which is going to have the intrepid Lone Gunmen cross paths with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Where’s Scully to debunk this stuff when you really need her?

It’s not just the Lone Gunmen and the Heroes in a Half Shell who will be thrust into each other’s worlds. The Conspiracy storyline first involved a meeting with the Ghostbusters, a crossover that I’m more okay with for reasons I can’t really articulate. Maybe just because I’d love to see X-Files-era David Duchovny and Ghostbusters-era Bill Murray attempt to out-charm and out-banter each other. Further issues will bring the Crow and, no shit, the Transformers into the proceedings. Fuck it, let’s get Howard the Duck in on this while we’re at it, I don’t think Marvel is using him right now anyway.

But hey, if you’ve been saying for years that the Lone Gunmen needed to investigate the subject of sewer-dwelling mutant martial arts enthusiasts, well, this should be right up your alley.

The Turtles are doing their best to avoid trouble in Northampton. Unfortunately, trouble finds them in the form of the Lone Gunmen! The fate of the world depends on the Gunmen getting the reclusive Turtles’ help. Add in an undead menace and things are going to get downright dangerous!
