This guy seems familiar.

Boba FettIt looks like the Star Wars Boba Fett spinoff movie has found its lead actor. Temuera Morrison has been tapped to portray the iconic Mandalorian bounty hunter.

The New Zealand-born actor is most known for another role in the Star Wars universe: Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones. Jango is the ostensible “father” of Boba, an identical genetic clone that he raised as his own son. So if you were wondering how one actor can play both father and son, that’s how they’re going to pull it off. This won’t be Morrison’s first go round as Han Solo’s arch nemesis—or one of them anyway, the guy has made some enemies. Morrison also voiced Boba Fett in a 2004 special edition of The Empire Strikes Back.

Two other actors are also named in this report. Mason Brett (The Expendables 3) will apparently play someone named Sgt. Stakewich, while Mike Kasem, son of recently deceased radio legend Casey Kasem, will fill an as yet unnamed role.

If Morrison is indeed the fan-favorite mercenary, you have to expect that the story could follow an older version of the character. In the Star Wars expanded universe, Boba Fett survives his nosedive into the Sarlac pit in Return of the Jedi, and manages to crawl his way out and have even more adventures. We know that while Lucasfilm and their new Disney overlords don’t consider the EU official canon, they have said that it is open to be mined for future content, so it is definitely possible that the standalone movie could follow this storyline.

Though it definitely seems that the next movie after J.J. Abrams drops Star Wars: Episode VII in December 2015 will be the solo Fett film, nothing is exactly official yet. According to the list that leaked from Hasbro a while back, the schedule for the next six years looks like this:

2014: Rebels
2015: Episode VII
2016: Boba Fett
2017: Episode VIII
2018: Solo
2019: Episode IX
2020: Red Five

Temuera MorrisonWe also know that Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards will direct the first of the three standalone films—Josh Trank (Chronicle) will reportedly fill the role for the second, which, according to this list, will be a Han Solo joint.

This film is still listed on IMDb as Untitled Star Wars Project, though if one of the only roles filled is Boba Fett, it’s an easy leap towards assuming that’s the movie we’re going to get first. Though we have heard rumblings of the Han film, almost all of the reports we’ve come across have to do with the bounty hunter. Series stalwart Lawrence Kasdan is supposedly penning the script, even though the execs are having a difficult time figuring out how to make him a good guy. Really, the cold, heartless, armor plated, gun-for-hire isn’t automatically the most warm and fuzzy character you can imagine? Weird. Either way, it’s hard not to get excited about idea of the man who introduced the world to Boba Fett—Kasdan also wrote Empire—revisiting the character.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about this, but what do you all think about this? Are you excited for a Boba Fett-centric movie with Morrison in the lead, Edwards at the helm, and Kasdan fleshing out the story?
