Those who are still waiting on news about a fifth Shrek movie will have to wait a little longer, but they can at least take solace in the fact that a beloved spin-off is finally getting a sequel. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is expected to come out in September of this year. The movie will see both Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek returning to voice Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws, respectively.

In addition to Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has a whole new cast of characters joining the mix. For one, they have a new sidekick named Perro, a dog voiced by Harvey Guillén. Not only that, but Florence Pugh, John Mulaney, Olivia Colman, Samson Kayo, Ray Winstone, Wagner Moura, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Anthony Mendez are all set to have roles in the movie. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will follow Puss in Boots on a journey where he seeks the Last Wish to restore his nine lives. This is after finding out his adventures have cost him eight of them.

We first met the character in Shrek 2, where he was originally contracted to take Shrek out before becoming a friend and ally. Puss would appear in the Shrek sequels following his initial appearance, as well as his own spin-off movie in 2011. The 2011 movie gave us an origin story for Puss in Boots and saw him teaming up with Salma Hayek’s Kitty Softpaws to find the eggs of the Golden Goose.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be the first proper movie we’ve seen in the Shrek universe since 2011’s Puss in Boots and 2010’s Shrek Forever After. Talks and rumors have been circulating about a fifth Shrek movie for a while now, but there’s nothing concrete on that front yet. According to a report by Variety in 2018, Chris Meledandri was handed the reins on bringing both the fifth Shrek movie and a Puss in Boots sequel to screens. It looks like the latter half of that deal is finally coming to fruition, so it looks like we may have to wait a little longer for more news on a proper sequel to the fourth Shrek film. In the meantime, Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek should provide plenty of thrills for audiences in the land of Far, Far Away.

The story for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was handled by Meledandri, with a script by Paul Fisher. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado are on as directors. The trailer for the sequel is due out this week, so keep your eyes peeled if you want to see what’s next for Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots and Salma Hayek’s Kitty Softpaws. In the meantime, you can see Antonio Banderas as the villain in the Uncharted movie that also stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Salma Hayek can be seen alongside Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, and Al Pacino in the Oscar-nominated House of Gucci where she played Pina Auriemma.
