If you’re a fan of Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor, yet always wished more films would go the single-actor-playing-multiple-characters route, you’re in luck. Robert Downey Jr. will portray a handful of characters in The Sympathizer, an upcoming HBO series produced in collaboration with A24 and Rhombus Media.

In the exciting and mind-melting trailer, the actor portrays at least four—four—characters, including a CIA handler with terrible, fascinating fake blonde hair, a mysterious bald man, an equally mysterious youngish dark-haired man, and yet another, identically mysterious gentleman, in a hat.

Color us intrigued.

The Sympathizer is directed by the visionary Park Chan-wook, known for his work on Oldboy, and produced by none other than Robert Downey Jr. himself.

The show looks fascinating, to say the least—if an acid trip could be defined as “fascinating”—and appears primed to redefine the landscape of television storytelling.

The series is an adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name and will debut on HBO and Max on April 14, 2024. Cinema fans are as excited as bookworms who loved the novel because the entire series is directed by the visionary Park Chan-wook, known for his work on Oldboy. Plus, The Sympathizer is produced by none other than Robert Downey Jr. himself.

The show will captivatingly blend espionage, comedy, and a thorough exploration of cultural identity. The trailer for the series will leave you equally intrigued, bewildered, provoked by the project’s complex narrative and ambitious scope.

Expect a project standing out for, in addition to its engaging storytelling, a bold and courageous commentary on American Cold War policy, aptly demonstrated through Robert Downey Jr.’s depiction of multiple characters.

Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey Jr. in The Sympathizer

Best described as a historical black comedy-drama, the show follows the journey of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy—portrayed by Hoa Xuande—as he navigates the tumultuous closing days of the Vietnam War before his subsequent life as a refugee in Los Angeles.

Expect a project standing out for, in addition to its engaging storytelling, a bold and courageous commentary on American Cold War policy, aptly demonstrated through Robert Downey Jr.’s depiction of multiple characters, all embodying various facets of the theme.

The famed actor, beloved for his role as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will have much more involvement than his four roles in the trailer. Downey Jr. serves as an executive producer alongside his wife, Susan Downey, and his creative input is palpable throughout the project.

It doesn’t hurt that the series sports a stellar cast lending depth and authenticity to the project, including Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, and Toan Le.

Obviously, one facet of highlighting and his commitment to the project is his versatility as an actor, playing four characters, and as a producer. Robert Downey Jr. has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Oppenheimer, a positive development that should double as great advertising for The Sympathizer.

From the director’s chair, Park Chan-wook’s involvement ensures that The Sympathizer will be both a narrative journey and a visual spectacle. The filmmaker’s unique ability to mix genres and tones—from tragic to satirical—promises a streaming series that, especially with multiple Robert Downey Jr. characters, will be as unpredictable as it is engaging.

It doesn’t hurt that the series sports a stellar cast lending depth and authenticity to the project, including Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, and Toan Le.

The Sympathizer should challenge audiences to navigate the blurred lines dividing right from wrong, all while confronting the complexities of identity, loyalty, and the aftermath of warThrow in Robert Downey Jr. playing four different roles, and we’re all in.
