The massive success of the Mortal Kombat game franchise has left fans demanding a film adaptation for decades. After failing to please fans with poorly-adapted installations in 1995 and 1997, 2021’s Mortal Kombat managed to make a splash at the box office for its inventive choreography and dazzling effects. Now, thanks to a first look tease from producer Todd Garner on X, fans are anticipating the arrival of Princess Kitana and Shao Kahn in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2.

Despite receiving mixed reviews, 2021’s Mortal Kombat managed to lay the groundwork for an expansive world of video game mayhem, adapting some of the most significant characters in the Mortal Kombat canon to the big screen. Of course, some fans noted the absence of a number of characters, who are expected to make their debut in Mortal Kombat 2. Thanks to Todd Garner’s post, fans can now all but confirm the appearance of Princess Kitana and Shao Kahn.

Garner serves as the founder and head of the production company Broken Road Productions, which currently has a hand in developing Mortal Kombat 2 alongside Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema. In an effort to reinvigorate fan interest for the film, the producer has been sharing a number of behind-the-scenes images of props and costumes, while providing a comprehensive timeline of the production’s ongoing shoot.

Like many other films, Mortal Kombat 2‘s production was halted for several months in 2023 as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions went on strike, prompting a work stoppage. Now that filming has resumed, these sneak peeks provide fans with a chance to see that the movie is in good hands, with producers who care about the source material they’re adapting, and offer the same enthusiasm that fans would on the production.

Who’s Portraying Shao Kahn And Princess Kitana?

The narrative demand for Shao Kahn and Kitana’s arrival on Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat 2 has been clear since the epic climax of the 2021 film, wherein Mileena is defeated and killed in battle by Sonya Blade. Mileena, who serves as the central antagonist of the first film, is General Kahn’s daughter and Kitana’s sister. After learning of the failure and subsequent death of his daughter, Kahn will no doubt wield the mighty wrath hammer with the intent of avenging her memory, with the added incentive of conquering Earthrealm to mine for resources. Martyn Ford and Adeline Rudolph are set to portray Shao Kahn and Princess Kitana in the upcoming film, with additional characters such as Quan Chi and King Jerrod slated to arrive as well. With the recent success of the latest game in the series, Mortal Kombat 1 releasing last September, and recentering the game’s key players, fans can rest assured that Mortal Kombat 2 will contain all the high-octane insanity they have come to demand from a proper adaptation.
