Yes, Loki is back for Season 2, and fans everywhere are rejoicing for the next chapter in one of the best series to come from Marvel and Disney+. Of course, audiences have been delighted to see Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief teaming up with familiar faces like Owen Wilson’s Mobius and Gugu Mbathat-Raw’s Renslayer all over again. But, as the New York Times reports, not all MCU characters were on the table for the show’s writers to use, with some being simply no-gos to make cameo appearances in the series.

Loki Season 2 brings more multiversal madness to the MCU, but a writer admits Marvel stopped them from using the big names.

When penning the screenplay for Loki Season 2, writer Eric Martin says that Marvel asked the creative team to not use certain personalities as they were being saved for other projects coming from the studio. While he says that the writers had their “own little sandbox” and were “able to be really creative,” there were a few things that were completely off the table. Admitting that there were times when they were forced to “pivot” following “marching orders” from those at the top, Martin says that, for the most part, they were given free rein on how to form “our drama and our story and where we’re taking our characters.”

We know Jonathan Majors is returning as Kang, or at least, one of his variants, Victor Timely, will be in Loki Season 2.

The news of Loki Season 2 needing to make some changes when it came to what characters they were and weren’t able to use should come as no surprise to any followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase by phase, the Kevin Feige-led studio has made it a top priority and goal to give audiences the stories that they want while incorporating fan-favorite characters who many of us may not have seen coming. Keeping up with those secret appearances is one of the things that has made the MCU the success that it is.

With both small-screen and big-screen titles, including Blade, Fantastic Four, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Ironheart, Deadpool 3, The Marvels, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts coming down the line, we can expect a multitude of exciting surprises as Marvel continues to outdo themselves time and time again. And, while Loki Season 2 may have needed to backpedal on some of the characters they were planning on plugging into the storyline, there are still plenty of new faces to keep the intriguing storyline going.

The news of Loki Season 2 needing to make some changes when it came to what characters they were and weren’t able to use should come as no surprise to any followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

First introduced during the first season of Loki, Season 2 brings back Marvel’s latest big bad, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). Since breaking onto the scene in Loki, the character has appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, further solidifying himself as the Avengers’ next menace. This season of Loki has also brought back the likes of Tara Strong, Eugene Cordero, Wunmi Mosaku, Neil Ellice, and Sophia Di Martino with newcomers including Ke Huy Quan, Liz Carr, Rafael Casal, and Kate Dickie joining the fold.

Now two of its six episodes in, Loki Season 2 has seen the titular character duking it out with the Time Variance Authority while trying to locate Sylvie (Di Martino) after the tail end of last season saw the pair split up and zapped into different levels of space and time. Just as much of a success as the premiere season, audiences have been loving the latest series to come from Marvel and Disney+.
