Recently, celebrated Danish director, Thomas Vinterberg, took the stage at Oscars 2021 to accept the Best International Feature win for his 2020 film Another Round. And reportedly, Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t waste a second in nabbing the remake rights to the movie under his production banner, Appian Way. He is set to star as the high school teacher tackling a mid-life crisis in the remake, a character which was memorably played by the famous Mads Mikkelsen in the original that is available in Dutch, Swedish, and Danish.

Vinterberg’s comedy-drama Another Round starred Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, and Lars Ranthe as four high school teachers who decide to conduct a social experiment- consuming alcohol daily and observing how their social, as well as professional lives, are affected by it. The film, based on a screenplay by Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm, has been a favorite of critics, something which is evident from the high approval rating of 92% it holds on Rotten Tomatoes. No wonder that Leonardo DiCaprio is so eager to star in a remake of the film!

While the news of Leonardo DiCaprio remaking Another Round isn’t exactly being cheered by fans of the original film and Mikkelsen, director Vinterberg is not bothered by the fact. Even though he is not going to be involved in the making of the film as a writer or director, he is still planning to meet Appian Way soon to discuss the remake. For Vinterberg, a remake is not something to be abhorred or shunned. Many of his films, including his 1998 film, The Celebration, have been adapted numerous times as stage plays and interpreted differently. Vinterberg finds it “artistic” to see his work “grow into different versions.

As for Another Round, Vinterberg believes that with Leonardo DiCaprio set to produce and star in the remake, his work is “in the hands of the finest actor you can get.” And thus he is very hopeful and excited to see how the film is remade in English.

But fans online have not been happy with Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead, especially because Mikkelsen speaks fluent English and many are demanding that he gets to play his character from the original in the remake too. But the Oscar-winning director feels that if there is going to be a different interpretation of his film, asking Mikkelsen to play a different iteration of his character would not sit well. And while he refused to make any comments on who would be the best fit for the role in place of Mikkelsen, he did share that he has watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and found it to be a “masterpiece.”

Leonardo DiCaprio was last seen in the 2019 film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and after a brief hiatus, he now has a busy year ahead. Whether he gets to star in the remake of Another Round or not, he already has his plate full with multiple films like Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, The Devil in the White City wherein he will play the dreaded serial killer H. H. Holmes, and the Netflix comedy Don’t Look Up.
