Game shows are an excellent way for competitive, money-motivated people to pit themselves against people they don’t know in a bid to win fame, notoriety, and tons of cash. The appeal of these kinds of programs is clear, and now, the popular Nickelodeon game show Legends of the Hidden Temple from the early 1990s is being revived and reworked, this time for a different crowd.

According to a new piece from Variety, the CW is reviving Legends of the Hidden Temple for adult contestants. The report mentions that the “Moat Crossings,” “The Steps of Knowledge,” the “Temple Run,” and all of the shamelessly silly-but age-appropriate team names such as “Purple Parrots,” “Blue Barracudas,” “Orange Iguanas,” “Red Jaguars,” “Silver Snakes” and “Green Monkeys,” will be featured in the revival. Fans will also be delighted to know that Olmec is also making his triumphant return.

This Legends of the Hidden Temple revival joins other TV reboots to which avid television watchers are looking forward, including that long-gestating Stargate SG-1 revival from producer Brad Wright. As I mentioned above, this particular revival will bring back some of its original’s most beloved elements even as it makes some important changes. But aside from being tailored to older audiences, this update looks to be pretty dang close to the Legends of the Hidden Temple we all knew and loved.

The biggest change The Legends of the Hidden Temple is making to its format is its setting. According to Variety, the reboot will take contestants out of the studio and into a jungle fraught with even more frustrating challenges and even flashier prizes. It seems that the people behind the show are honoring their audience in a fun way. They recognize that the people who watched the show are no longer children, so they tweak certain things to appeal to these now-adults who are seeking both nostalgia and something a bit different. Originally, the revival was meant to be available on the ill-fated Quibi. But after Quibi shut down, these plans were derailed and the show’s future was thrown into uncertainty.

For those who do not know what any of this is, here is a quick rundown of the game show’s beginnings: Legends of the Hidden Temple was a popular action-adventure game show originally broadcasted on Nickelodeon from 1993 to 1995. Inspired by Nintendo’s famous The Legend of Zelda video game series and the iconic Indiana Jones film franchise, Legends of the Hidden Temple involved six teams (names included above), each comprised of a boy and a girl, who must progress through a temple guarded by the Dee Bradley Baker-voiced Olmec by answering questions centered around history, mythology, and geography and completing physical tasks. The show was created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone, and Stephen Brown.

The Legends of the Hidden Temple revival was just ordered by the CW earlier this week, so no premiere date is currently available. But stay tuned anyway! Now that the ball is officially rolling, we likely will not have long to wait before we get something more concrete.
