Fans of Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone know that Costner truly thrives in the Western genre, but he’s been in plenty more Western projects than just his hit series. If you haven’t seen him in the 1985 film Silverado, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The film is one of Costner’s earliest prominent roles, has a fantastic ensemble cast, and is currently available to stream on Netflix.
Silverado is a Western directed and co-written by Lawrence Kasdan, best known for his work on iconic films like Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Along with Kevin Costner, the film stars Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, Brian Dennehy, Rosanna Arquette, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Lynne Whitfield, and Linda Hunt. The film has everything you could want from a Western, with memorable characters and stunning cinematography.
Set in the late 1800s, Silverado follows our four lead characters as they journey to a town in search of their own fortunes, only to find the town has fallen under the grip of a greedy rancher and the town’s corrupt Sheriff. Kevin Cline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and Kevin Costner’s misfit group of cowboys make for a strong core ensemble, giving the film that old Western feel while also bringing some more modern touches to the genre. If you’re a Western fan or a fan of Costner in general, it’s not one to miss.
Critics Praise The Western Feel And Strong Performances
Silverado received generally positive reviews upon its release, with critics appreciating the homage to the Western genre that also made it more accessible for contemporary audiences at the time. Kevin Costner and the cast’s strong performances were bolstered by Kasdan and his brother’s strong script, which gave each character enough development to make them each stand out in unique ways. Of course, the aforementioned cinematography that captures the essence of the American Old West is breathtaking as well.
Silverado At The Box Office
As for the box office, Silverado‘s take wasn’t all that impressive, and it pulled in about $32.1 million when all was said and done. Silverado had the very unfortunate timing of going up against Back to the Future during its theatrical run. So, it’s not surprising that a Western, which was on the decline as a popular genre, wasn’t able to stand up against one of the most beloved sci-fi films of all time.
Kevin Costner’s Breakout Role
Silverado was a crucial film for Kevin Costner, giving him his first major breakout role. The film helped establish him in Hollywood and likely helped prove that he had the chops for a starring role, which he got a couple of years later in The Untouchables. Costner’s star would continue to rise after this, starring in major films like Field of Dreams and even directing (and starring in) Oscar winners like Dances with Wolves.
Kevin Costner continues to carve his own path in Hollywood, with his recent starring role as John Dutton in the hit series Yellowstone giving him a sort of late-career resurgence. Decades after Silverado, Yellowstone has become massively successful, with the flagship show getting high ratings and viewership numbers and the numerous spin-off shows drawing large audiences of their own. However, Costner will finally be hanging up his Yellowstone boots after the upcoming second half of the finale season airs.
While the Yellowstone universe will move on without Kevin Costner, Costner is far from done with the Western genre. It seems like Costner is putting together his magnum opus, as he is directing, writing, producing, and starring in an upcoming epic two-part film titled Horizon: An American Saga. The film is set in the pre– and post–American Civil War period and will show the expansion of the American West through the lens of various characters.
Kevin Costner has assembled a star-studded cast for Horizon: An American Saga that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower. Chapter 1 is set to be released on June 28, 2024, and Chapter 2 is scheduled to be released on August 16, 2024. In the meantime, keep an eye out for the release date for the final episodes of Yellowstone, and make sure to check out Silverado on Netflix if you’re missing Costner’s Western stylings.
