Star Trek Icon Says Picard Spinoff Isn’t Happening

For those of you who were hoping for a Star Trek: Picard spinoff, we have some bad news for you. According to John de Lancie (more affectionately known as Q), it doesn’t seem likely that a spinoff series will materialize any time soon, or at all. Though there have been talks about a possible Legacy series that would pick up where Picard left off, production designer David Blass also squashed our hopes and dreams, suggesting that Legacy would be a nice idea but there are presently no plans to move forward with the project.

Paramount Focusing On Other Priorities

John de Lancie originally had reason to believe that a spinoff would eventually be developed because Picard’s season 3 finale definitely hinted at the prospect. Q, who met his fate in the season 2 finale, had a brief post-credits scene at the end of the series finale. But since Paramount is currently working on Section 31 and Starfleet Academy, Legacy doesn’t seem to be a priority.

Star Trek: Picard’s Finale

At the very least, we got to see John de Lancie’s Q one last time at the series’ conclusion. So even though it’s not likely that we’ll be blessed with the spinoff that has been teased in the past, the door has been left open for the franchise to explore the idea if they decide to revisit the idea. We’ll have to be patient, however, as Blass made it clear that logistics and financing need to be considered.

Even if the stars aligned, the harsh reality is that if the spinoff were to be green-lit today, production probably wouldn’t be feasible until at least 2025.

The Future Of Q

Should the spinoff series get pushed along at a future date, John de Lancie has a few ideas on how Q’s character could work in the series. Stating that his character has always been a disruptive force that forces everybody to learn important philosophical lessons, he believes that Q would best serve the series in this capacity.

But since we’re speaking in purely hypothetical terms, the best we can do is weep and wish that Legacy would get the green light. If you want to hear more from John de Lancie, he will be talking about his time working on Picard and his thoughts on the Star Trek franchise as a whole on the All Access Star Trek podcast Friday.

A Picard Movie?

It’s worth noting, however, that there have been reports of an upcoming Picard movie in the works. Patrick Stewart spoke about the film that’s still very much in the development phases on a somewhat recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. It’s unlikely that John de Lancie will be involved in the project, as the movie will mostly center on Picard’s legacy and focus on his character’s life rather than the entire crew.

Wait And See

For the time being, we’ll just have to wait for further developments. With all of the upcoming Star Trek movies and series currently in the works, the franchise simply has too many moving parts to consider before John de Lancie reprises his role. But stranger things have happened, so we’ll be sure to report back with any updates involving the spinoff we so desperately want to get developed.
