It Follows Sequel With Maika Monroe Actually Happening, Details Revealed

By Robert Scucci | Published

Variety reports that the long-awaited and highly anticipated sequel to It Follows will start production in 2024. The sequel will bring writer/director David Robert Mitchell back to helm the project, and Maika Monroe will also be reprising her role as Jaime “Jay” Height in the upcoming sequel.

The fact that the title isn’t It Follows 2, but rather They Follow leads us to believe that we’re going to be dealing with more than one murderous entity.

It Follows 2 Talks

There have been talks about producing It Follows 2 since the original film’s universal acclaim and runaway success at the box office.

With Maika Monroe reprising her role, and David Robert Mitchell offering his talents on the directorial front, it’s safe to say that They Follow will be everything that its predecessor was, but possibly even more horrifying.

If you’re familiar with the first film, then you know that it was left open-ended with an unknown entity following Jay and her boyfriend, Paul, right before the final credits take over the screen.

It Follows Release

It Follows blew everybody away upon its initial release and has an intimidating 95 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Financially speaking, it was only a matter of time before It Follows 2/They Follow would eventually enter development phases.

With a reported production budget of $1.3 million, the horror film went on to earn an impressive $23.3 million at the worldwide box office, making it the perfect film to kick off a sequel, trilogy, or long-running franchise.

Film’s Wild Premise

It Follows centers on a group of teenagers who learn that a sexually transmitted curse is causing a shape-shifting entity to stalk and murder its subjects.

If the curse isn’t passed on to another subject, the entity will systematically track down and kill the last person who had a sexual encounter with somebody who was carrying the curse.

It Follows Ending

Though It Follows ends with Maika Monroe’s Jay and Keir Gilchrist’s Paul seemingly finding peace, the presence of the entity nods at a potential sequel, and now that It Follows 2/They Follow has been confirmed, we can only assume that we’re about to witness another bloodbath involving Jay and those who are close to her.

More Horror In It Follows 2?

But stylizing the upcoming horror film as They Follow rather than It Follows 2 leads us to believe that there is more than one entity involved in the bloodshed, which makes us wonder if there was another entity that we weren’t aware of in the first film.

Whether there were multiple entities all along, or if we’re exploring new territory with the sequel remains to be seen, but we can only hope that the storytelling and cinematography will be just as horrifying as the 2015 film, which many reviewers consider to be the best horror film of its respective decade.

Release Plans

It Follows 2 will be released by Neon, the same Oscar-winning studio that put out 2019’s Parasite. Though Neon CEO Tom Quinn was originally toying with the idea of They Follow possibly centering on a different protagonist, it’s clear that a more direct sequel has materialized now that Maika Monroe has been confirmed to reprise her role as Jay.

Production for They Follow is slated for 2024, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility that it will face delays due to the ongoing strike.

We’ll circle back with updates as more details emerge.
