We think Rocket is the most likely hero to die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
We got a new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer during the Super Bowl, and fan theories are popping off all over the Internet. CinemaBlend and others reported James Gunn had said someone wouldn’t be making it out of the threequel back in 2021, and everyone is analyzing the trailer to look for hints. All signs point to Rocket going down in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
We’re getting an in-depth tragic backstory about Rocket, a love story, and right before the above screenshot there’s an ominous title card that says “to face the music.” Also, James Gunn knows how to make a death hurt and Rocket’s might hurt the most to fans of the Guardians, especially when we learn all of the horrible things he went through at the hands of the High Evolutionary.
Speaking of the High Evolutionary, he’s the main antagonist. Rocket has the most history with the main antagonist and probably has the biggest bone to pick. It would be easy to see a scenario where Rocket sacrifices himself in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to ensure the High Evolutionary’s experiments end once and for all.
The above screenshot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gives us the strongest clue that it’s one of the Guardians who is dying. Peter Quill is clearly next to some sort of hospital table with tubes, so someone could be dying on that table. It could be Rocket, or it could be someone else — like possibly Drax.
While this trailer doesn’t give us any particularly strong cases for Drax dying, we do know Dave Bautista is ready to leave the MCU after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Drax has pretty much wrapped up his character arc, so a heroic sacrifice could undoubtedly be in the cards for the beloved bruiser. Of course, another big death that could possibly make sense is Drax’s best buddy Mantis.
The above screenshot from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer shows Drax and Mantis sharing what seems to be a serious moment. One of them could be getting ready to make the ultimate sacrifice, considering we usually see these two goofing around. Also, Mantis was just revealed to be Peter Quill’s half-sister in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which would certainly warrant the intense reaction we see from Quill in the previous screenshot.
As for the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it might be safe to assume that they won’t meet their ultimate demise. It seems like Peter Quill and Nebula will likely be around for more movies, and nothing has been pointing to their deaths. Gamora and Groot both died in previous movies, so it doesn’t seem like James Gunn would retread familiar ground.
In any case, you may want to consider preparing for waterworks when you go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We’ll find out if any of our theories are right when the movie comes out on May 5. Make sure to stay tuned for more news and more MCU theories.
