The trailer for Humane, an upcoming dystopian thriller movie, just dropped, showcasing the directorial debut of Caitlin Cronenberg, and it’s already causing a stir among the fans of the genre with a promise of bloody action exploration of various ethical dilemmas. If you raised an eyebrow at her last name, don’t worry, your instincts are right, and she is the daughter of horror legend David Cronenberg. Now are you excited?

Humane takes place mere months after a global ecological collapse, which has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to ensure humanity’s survival, and those measures involve reducing the overall population count. Of course, a certain number of people volunteer to die in order to save the world through the nation’s new euthanasia program. A recently retired and wealthy newsman who has enlisted in the program announces his intentions to his family over dinner, but his plan goes horribly wrong, causing chaos among his grown children.

From Humane’s trailer, however, we can already discern that the kids are at each other’s throats, trying to decide who else has to die while resorting to violence to ensure that they don’t end up drawing the shortest straw. The shooting was wrapped up in Hamilton, Ontario, near the end of 2022. Humane stars Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up, This Is the End), Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek, 12 Monkeys), Peter Gallagher (American Beauty, Grace and Frankie), and Alanna Bale (Sort Of , Cardinal) as members of a family who face a disturbing dilemma over the course of one day.

It promises to be a rather interesting take on the moral and ethical dilemmas associated with a whole slew of topics, including euthanasia and the fight for survival, including descending into borderline savagery. Humane is Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature film directorial debut, but she previously helmed short films like The Endings and The Death of David Cronenberg—the iconic horror director best known for his work on The Fly, Videodrome, Naked Lunch, A History of Violence, The Dead Zone, and many others.

Furthermore, Caitlin Cronenberg isn’t the only Humane crew member who has a connection to the horror legend. Doug Koch, who served as a Director of Photography on David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future in 2021, also served in the same position on Humane. The same can be said for Dierdre Bowen, who served as a casting director for A History of Violence and Crimes of the Future. Several other people who previously worked on David Cronenberg’s films have also worked on Caitlin Cronenberg’s Humane.
