Good Burger 2 Breaks Surprising Streaming Record

Good Burger 2 has become the most-watched original film on Paramount+, surpassing previous record holder Pet Sematary: Bloodlines by an impressive 50 percent. According to The Wrap, the data is based on active subscriber households on various platforms during the initial three days following the domestic launch.

Kenan Thompson Reacts

The news is a delightful surprise to the creative team, with Kenan Thompson expressing his amazement in a press release. “Seeing Good Burger 2 hit No. 1 on Paramount+ as their biggest original movie ever was totally surreal. It’s amazing to see the movie bringing kids together with the generation that grew up with the first one,” he said.

“It also has an extra personal meaning for me because reuniting with my brother Kel takes it back to where it all began for us,” Thompson continued about Good Burger 2. “I’m so proud that my production company, Artists for Artists, helped with producing this film – shout out to my partner Johnny Ryan and the whole creative team.”

A Dream Come True For Kel Mitchell

Kel Mitchell, Thompson’s co-star and long-time collaborator, also shared his sentiments about Good Burger 2. “It was a blessing to work with Kenan again and step back into Good Burger,” he said. “I’m amazed that after all these years, Ed still brings laughs to people of all ages, and I hope kids and families enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

“To see the movie break records as the most-watched original film on Paramount+ is a dream come true,” Mitchell added. The Good Burger franchise began as a recurring sketch on the Nickelodeon sketch show All That, starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. The films follow the comedic misadventures of two fast food workers, Dexter Reed (Thompson) and the eccentric Ed (Mitchell).

26 Years After Good Burger

In the first movie, Dexter takes on a fast-food job with Ed, leading them into a chaotic plot orchestrated by a rival fast-food chain. Good Burger 2, which premiered on Paramount+ on November 22, is set 26 years after the events of the first movie. After a failed career as an inventor, Dexter returns to Good Burger to find that Ed is now the proud owner of the establishment.

Faced with the threat of MegaCorp, a powerful conglomerate, Dexter and Ed must once again save Good Burger from impending doom. Discussions about a sequel began in 2018, sparked by the shared interest of Thompson and Mitchell three years after the duo’s reunion on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2015.

Response Is Mixed

The official announcement for Good Burger 2 came in March 2023, with confirmation of both actors reprising their roles as Dexter Reed and Ed, respectively. Nickelodeon Movies and Awesomeness Films collaborated to produce the film, and the shooting schedule, from May to June of 2023, mirrored the original production timeline.

Good Burger 2 currently holds a 53 percent critics rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 72 percent audience score. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 46 out of 100 based on evaluations from five critics, categorizing the reviews as “mixed or average.

More Good Burger Movies

Phil Traill, the director of Good Burger 2, discussed the series’ future with Radio Times, unveiling plans for additional sequels. Expressing enthusiasm, Traill highlighted the enduring nature of Kel Mitchell’s Ed character, emphasizing the possibility of creating an ongoing series of films focusing on the consistent and dedicated employee.

“The character of Ed has not changed,” Traill told the publication. “He now has a family. He’s got a bunch of kids and a wife, but he himself is still the same old Ed. As that doesn’t change, we can just do it again and again and put them in crazier and crazier situations. There are plans afoot for various different things. I don’t think it has to be limited to a trilogy. It can go on.”

Good Burger 2 also sees the return of several familiar faces, such as Josh Server reprising his role as Fizz, Lori Beth Denberg returning as Connie Muldoon, and Carmen Electra back as Roxanne. Jillian Bell joins the project as Katt Bozwell, the CEO of MegaCorp and sister of Kurt Bozwell.

The success of Good Burger 2 not only demonstrates the enduring appeal of the franchise but also showcases the power of nostalgia in bringing together audiences of all ages.
