Brie Larson was contracted for a sequel to Captain Marvel when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Everyone assumed that her superhero would be headlining the follow-up installment, but a huge surprise was dropped when the sequel was revealed to be called The Marvels and the logo seemed to indicate that it would be a crossover with the Kamala Khan character that will be starring in Ms. Marvel. Immediately, fans began to wonder just why this title change was brought on and why it was downplaying Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Theories have been abounding, so we decided to reach out to our insider sources that have been proven correct a number of times when giving us other scoops in the past. And they came back with a genuinely surprising answer.

According to our source, Brie Larson saw Captain Marvel 2 turn into The Marvels because the powers-that-be at Marvel Studios did not feel that she “delivered” in the first one on her own. We were not able to clarify the exactness of what that meant, but it was clear that the folks at Marvel Studios were not confident that another solo Captain Marvel movie was strong enough to stand on its own two legs. So, they decided to reconfigure the Brie Larson sequel into a team-up movie in order to generate more interest from audiences and fans. This leads us to wonder if the original plan for Captain Marvel 2 did not involve Kamala Khan or that her role was not going to be as prominent.

But, that is not all that is in store for the Brie Larson movie. Our source also says that there will be other superheroes joining the roster for The Marvels. One of those will be Blue Marvel, a character that we have not yet seen make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Blue Marvel a.k.a. Adam Brashear has many of the same superpowers that Captain Marvel has, such as flight, superhuman strength, invulnerability, and energy generation. It would make sense for him to align with Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel. It would also add a layer of diversity to the lineup in the movie. And while our source could not confirm it, we have to believe that Monica Rambeau will play some role in The Marvels considering her history with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and what was hinted at in WandaVision.

Brie Larson being the figurehead for a superhero stable would definitely take some of the leading lady pressure off her since she could delegate duties to some of her fellow heroes. And since Marvel Studios does not have a big team-up movie like The Avengers in the works for a long time, having Brie Larson get her own superhero team could generate more enthusiasm from audiences than if the sequel was just a solo adventure.

Regardless, it looks like Brie Larson will be less of a singular superhero in her follow-up movie and will be positioned as more of a team leader in the future. Does this mean the Captain Marvel franchise is permanently shelved and that The Marvels is the new future for Carol Danvers? That certainly seems to be the case from everything we are hearing.
