Quicksilver is joining the world of Tron! The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed our exclusive story from the beginning of June that Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past) has joined the cast of Tron 3, aka Tron: Ares. Other than Jared Leto (Morbius), this is the first major casting news to come out of the threequel.

Along with confirming our Evan Peters scoop, THR also speculated about which part the Dahmer star will play in Tron 3. The outlet points out that while Peters’ role hasn’t been revealed yet, that the script includes a soldier in the digital world and a gamer in the real one. Whoever Peters plays, filming on Ares begins in Vancouver in August.

When we first reported on Evan Peters’ casting in Tron 3, we speculated that Peters could be taking over the role of Edward Dillinger, Jr., who Cillian Murphy played in 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Our reasoning was that the August filming start date might be too close to Murphy’s promotional efforts for Oppenheimer. However, what we didn’t know is that Tron 3 will apparently change its focus from Legacy, calling into question whether or not stars from the previous film will return.

THR reports that Tron: Ares is part of a “new direction” for the threequel, which has been in development since Legacy hit theaters. Leto will play Ares, a sentient computer program who somehow manifests in the real world. Considering the real-life emergence of artificial intelligence and the fears such technology is dredging up, Tron 3 could potentially plug into a cultural hotspot.

It was previously hoped that Evan Peters and Jared Leto would be joined by stars of Legacy like Bruce Boxleitner, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy, and of course Jeff Bridges. But with the word that Tron 3 will be changing course from its predecessor, it’s even more difficult to say if any of those actors could return.

Not only is this the first big casting news about Tron 3 since Leto was confirmed in the lead role, but this is also some of the first casting news we’ve heard about Evan Peters since the debut of the controversial Netflix hit series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Evan Peters won plenty of acclaim for playing the eponymous serial killer, though he wasn’t spared from the controversy. The star won a Golden Globe for his performance in Dahmer, and attracted plenty of ire when he failed to mention the real-life victims of Dahmer in his acceptance speech.
